Part 43 If Oak Trees Could Talk!

Hello Everyone, Welcome back to my video blog of If Oak Trees Could Talk!  I hope that you’ve been enjoying the last days of spring as we are marching quickly into summer.  I’ve been working on a New Book which I am very excited about and doing a few other projects that I’ve tried to put the finishing touches on!  I apologize that I’ve not done this blog for a couple of weeks, but we are moving on and I appreciate you hanging in here with me!

We will finish up Chapter 19 Henry the Spy and Go right into Chapter 20 Common Friends!

When Nurse Applegate knocked on their door, Helen answered once again. The nurse walked in first and then Henry followed.  He had a very productive walk. He was sure that he could formulate a plan to spy out the enemy.  When he walked into the room his eyes met Helen’s. She saw the slightest curl of his lip into his impish little grin, but Helen was quite upset and never smiled back.

“Here you are Mrs. Tyler. I am delivering Mr. Tyler back to you. I also have your medications.” Nurse Applegate stated.

Both Helen and Henry looked at each other as Nurse Applegate handed the small little pill cup with a couple of pills each in them.  Helen noticed right away that Henry had an extra one.  Henry could not have told anyone what kinds of medications that he had taken over the past six months or so. Henry watched Helen’s eyes and knew that something was wrong, so they both did as they had planned to do.  They would pretend to take the medication by hiding it under their tongues.  Helen only wished that Nurse Applegate would leave immediately.

They did just that, Helen handed Henry his pills with a glass of water and Henry pretended to take them.  But suddenly Helen thought to ask Nurse Applegate if it was okay for her to take hers on an empty stomach.

“Oh, I am sure it would be fine if you take it after you eat, Mrs. Tyler. Someone from the cafeteria should be bringing your food right up.  Just make for sure that you drink a full glass of water with them okay? Especially Mr. Tyler’s it looks as though his doctor has prescribed him something new for his severe allergies.

“Yes Nurse Applegate I sure will do that.” Helen promised as she flashed Henry a strange look.

“Is there anything else that I can get you before I leave for the night?”  Nurse Applegate asked.  I have to meet someone around Nine o’clock or so and it is Eight-thirty right now.

“No Sweetie, we will be fine.  Will we see you tomorrow?” Helen asked.

Suddenly someone knocked on the door.  Both Helen and Henry flashed each other a frightened glance that Nurse Applegate could not help but notice.  She knew that they were probably shaken up from the ordeal that they had just gone through.  So she reassured them, “I’m sure that is your trays!” Nurse Applegate said with an understanding smile as she opened the door.

Sure enough it was the kitchen leaving Henry and Helen’s Banana sandwiches.  Nurse Applegate took the tray and placed it on the little bistro table.

“Bon appétit, your gourmet meals awaits!” she teased with a smile.  Now to answer your question Mrs. Tyler, yes, I will be here tomorrow.  Looks like you and Mr. Tyler are stuck with me while you remain here.  Tonight the Nurse at the front desk, Nurse Warren will check in on you.  She will not step inside unless you need her to.   It is totally up to you.  Goodnight and have a peaceful night.  I know that you both must be exhausted.”

“Goodnight, thank you for everything!”  Helen said as the nurse walked out their door.  Henry immediately spit the pills out into the little cup that Nurse Applegate gave him.  They were bitter in his mouth, but had not dissolved.  When Helen saw them, she said, “The little white pill is one that you have been taking but that big white one is a new one.  Do not take it Henry!”  Helen ordered. “You must hide them somewhere until we can give them to Amelia tomorrow.  Severe Allergies, what a horrible lie!”

Chapter 20

Common Friends

When Nurse Applegate walked through the sliding doors to exit Glenview’s Residential Home for the Elderly, the air felt fresh and crisp after the earlier thunderstorm.  She took in a deep breath as she loved the way the air smelled after a rain. There were still standing puddles of muddy orange water in the parking lot.  She walked this way and that to avoid them until she got to her car.   Once she was in her car she began to think of what she would tell Amelia.  She had to protect her father  just as Amelia was trying to protect her parents from Mr. Hodges.  Nurse Applegate put her car into gear and drove directly to Maggie’s Pie and Coffee to meet Amelia.  She dreaded talking about her experiences with Mr. Hodges, but looked forward to really getting to know Amelia.  Nurse Applegate hoped to gain a friend in Amelia as they had much in common and she never knew anyone in Mason Creek other the elderly folks at Glenview.

Amelia arrived at Maggie’s Pie and Coffee before Nurse Applegate had.   She took the liberty of ordering Ms. Maggie’s famous apple pie for both she and Nurse Applegate.   Amelia had a trying day and it felt good to just sip on a steaming hot cup of coffee.  She spanned the room to see if anyone was there that she knew.  The boys coach and wife were sitting in a corner booth.  Amelia took the time to thank them for keeping the boys for them during her Daddy’s escape. Just as she was headed back to her seat at the counter where she had been sitting Nurse Applegate walked in.  Amelia greeted her with a smile.  She turned to the counter and asked Maggie if she could bring another cup of coffee and the slices of pie to a back table.  Nurse Applegate followed as Amelia lead.

“Hello Nurse Applegate, how are you?”  Amelia asked to begin conversation.

“Please call me Melba, I’ve been a nurse all day, and now I just want to be Melba!”  Nurse Applegate said with a chuckle.

“Sure, I like that much better anyway.” Amelia replied.

“Call me Amelia please.   Mrs. Steele sounds like I am iron lady!”  Amelia said as they both giggled.

“How did my parents do after I left?”  Amelia asked.  “I hope they are adjusting well, you know everything was new to them, no offense, but even you are new.  I just worried about them as I didn’t want Daddy to become confused.”

“Well, honestly they seem to adjust to the room pretty well, but Mr. Tyler was a little disoriented this evening.  I surmised it was because he had not had any of his meds today. They also had not had anything to eat since you were with them, so I made for sure they ordered them something before the cafeteria closed.  Mr. Tyler walked with me to the cafeteria and everything.”  Melba reported to Amelia.

“Really, that sounds a little weird!” Amelia said with a confused look on her face.  “Did he leave Momma alone?”

“Yes, he left Mrs. Tyler alone for the length of time it took us to make our trip.  I said trip because the reason he wanted to go was because he told me he wanted to see an old friend! I, of course, thought that he might have been talking about another patient, but instead he wanted to go back to his old room.  Maybe it was because it was familiar to him, but then once he went inside he took a picture from the wall.  When I walked in, he was talking to the picture and told his “old friend” that he missed it. I have seen this behavior Amelia in a lot of amnesia patients.  They get better, but out of the blue, they can revert back.  I assumed again it was because he had not had his meds.”  Melba tried to comfort.

“Well, he is not as crazy as you may think, Melba!”

“Oh, please I did not mean to imply that he was crazy!”  Melba said apologetically.

“Oh, excuse me, wrong choice of words on my part.  Let me explain.  My Daddy grew up in a house that was built by my Great Great Grandfather.  In the side yard of this house is a huge old Oak tree that my Daddy calls his old friend.  The picture on the wall in his room is a picture I brought him because somehow the tree seems to comfort him and help him.  I know that sounds crazy, but I was desperate to do anything that I could to help him come back to us.”  Amelia explained.

“Ah, that is the sweetest thing. Well, it seems to have worked.   I saw him hugging that picture just as though he was hugging a person.  The look on his face was priceless!”  Melba shared.

Today we begin in a new chapter of If Oak Trees Could Talk!

Chapter 19

Henry the Spy

Henry had awakened to his sweet Helen lying next to him.  He smiled at her and gently removed his arm from underneath her.  He could see that it was beginning to get dark and wondered how long they had slept.  Their room was strange to Henry and he became a little disoriented again.  He hated the feeling of panic that overwhelmed him.  He walked to the window and could see that it had been raining.  He looked outside to the beautiful gardens and at first he thought that he could have been home, but nothing else seemed familiar.  He needed his old friend to help him.

He sat down at the end of the small couch and pictured the old Oak tree in his mind.  Immediately he was there under her branches, safe and carefree.  Suddenly the flood of memories of the past few days came back to him.  He smiled as he relived the beautiful time spent with Helen under the Oak tree and then in the sanctity of their home.  He also thought of Amelia, Robert, and the grand boys as they were his heart.  Suddenly as if a candle was lit in a dark room, Henry remembered Mr. Hodges and what he threatened to do and even attempted to do to them. He was angered and intended on doing something about it.

A plan, Henry thought, I have to come up with a plan.  Henry tried to remember the time he spent in the service.  His job was to be somewhat of a spy, in that he had to secretly locate the enemy’s location in order for his battalion of soldiers to plan their attacks.  Henry was nicknamed “The Ghost” by his fellow comrades and friends in the service. He had gotten so good at his job that he could practically walk into the enemy’s camp and listen to what they were saying.  Of course, he could not understand all of it because of the differences in the language that was spoken, however many times he understood enough to help his battalion win many battles.  As he continued to think about what he had to do in the service he tried to apply the same knowledge to Glenview or Mr. Hodges to be more precise.  Mr. Hodges was the enemy.  Henry needed to scope out the perimeter without being caught and plan his attack!

Helen suddenly rose up in the bed.  She was crying out Henry’s name!

“I am right here dear!”  Henry said as he rushed to comfort her.  “You were just having a bad dream!”  He continued.

“Oh, no I wasn’t Henry.  We need to get out of this place!  We need to go home as soon as possible.”  Helen cried.

“Now, now dear, everything is going to be alright.  Look at how far we’ve both already come.  We have not come this far to be stopped by some crazy maniac on a power trip! I will not allow him to harm you in any way my sweet Helen.”  Henry promised.

“Henry I do not want you to go near Mr. Hodges.  I seriously believe that he would love to kill you!”  She explained as she trembled.

“Now, Helen, that may be so, but Mr. Hodges does not know that The Ghost is here.”  Henry said with his little crooked smile.

Helen thought that Henry had reverted back in his mind.  She had no idea what Henry specialized in when he was in the service.  All she knew was that it was the longest years of her life being without him.  Helen felt that being in Glenview without Henry being in his right mind felt almost the same as when he was in the service.  The only exception was that she could touch him and see him every day whether he remembered it or not.   “Henry are you doing okay?”  Helen asked very gingerly as she did not want to upset him.  “What or who is the Ghost? I don’t believe in ghost Henry.”  Helen stated as she looked into Henry’s eyes to see if he was with her.

“Honey you may not believe in ghost, but you will dear, you will!”  Henry said again with a crooked smile.

“Henry what are you up to?  I recognize that look when you’re up to something! I don’t want you to go near Mr. Hodges.   He is a dangerous man! Promise me Henry!”  Helen ordered, but Henry just acted as though he did not hear her or understand.

“Henry, promise me!” Helen once again demanded.

“Okay, Henry promised.  I will just let the Ghost handle it!”

Henry took Helen’s face into his hands and kissed her gently.  I love you my Helen.  There is no one that is going to steal anymore time from us.  We will be home very soon.  We’ve worked hard to get back what was lost to us.  I refuse to lose it again!”

“Yes, Henry, you’ve had to come further than I think I have, but we are here aren’t we!”  Helen said with a smile.  Just as she had gotten those words out of her mouth there was a knock on the door.  She looked at Henry with a frightened look and the color drained out of her face.

“Stay calm dear, do not let on that we suspect a thing!” Henry warned.

Before when someone knocked on the door it was always either Amelia or Nurse Wanda, or possibly Helen’s doctors or her therapist. Now she, like Henry was in very unfamiliar territory and realized how frightened he must have been the past months.

Henry ran and got into bed.  He stared straight ahead as he did before when he wasn’t well.  Helen didn’t like it but again the knock came at the door!

“Come in!”  Helen answered.  Soon the door opened and it was Nurse Applegate.

“Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Tyler. Nurse Applegate said as she acted very friendly.

How was your rest?  I peeked in on you earlier and you seemed to be resting very well.  I didn’t want to disturb you.  I just wanted to see if you wanted to order something from the cafeteria before it closed?  It will close in the next half hour or so as it is just now Seven-thirty.”  She informed.

“We had a good rest dear, thank you!  Helen said sincerely. She then looked at Henry who was still staring forward as if he were in deep thought.  He never answered or said anything to Nurse Applegate about what he wanted, so Helen did as she had been doing

.           “Yes, Sweetie, could we get a couple of banana sandwiches please, one with peanut butter the other one with mayonnaise and maybe some lemon tea?” Helen asked as she placed both her and Henry’s order.

“Is Mr. Tyler okay?”  Nurse Applegate asked.  “I understand that he is doing better than what he was when he first come in?  I would hold in there Mrs. Tyler, sometimes these things have a way of working themselves out.”  Nurse Applegate encouraged.

“Yes, he is somewhat better.  Helen answered.  “We just want to be well and home.  I needed to ask you for a favor dear.  Could you make for sure that our things from our other rooms will be brought to us right away?  There is a huge picture of an old Oak tree framed and hanging on the wall that Henry has to have immediately.”  Helen said as she stressed the picture’s importance to Nurse Applegate.

“When I leave here, I will go immediately and check on your things. I will make for sure that the cleaning staff takes his picture from the wall and packs it with the rest of your things.  Is there anything else I can do for you?”  Nurse Applegate asked as she acted as if she was more than willing to serve Henry and Helen.

“No Sweetie that is all we need.” Helen answered.

“Well, I will return shortly with your meal and your medications. I know that you probably have not had any medications today unless you had some with you when you left yesterday.  Did you have any with you?”  Nurse Applegate asked.

“Yes, we had our medication, yesterday, before we went home, but none today.”  Helen said. She was very hesitant to say anything, as she suspected what Mr. Hodges had been using medications for.

“May I get you anything else Mr. and Mrs. Tyler?

“No, Nurse Applegate, that is all, thank you.” Mrs. Tyler said, but all of a sudden Henry spoke up and said “Good morning, yes I want to go and see my old friend.  Let’s go!”

Part 40 If Oak Trees Could Talk!

As Mother’s Day has just past and Father’s Day is coming next month, the characters of Henry and Helen in If Oak Trees Could Talk remind me of my own parents who have now both passed and went on to be the Lord, but will forever live larger than life in my heart! In writing this book, I wanted to honor my parents who not only gave me life, but taught me about how to live life!  Once again thank you for reading along with me or “tuning in” to my video blogs of If Oak Trees Could Talk!   I really hope that you’ve enjoyed this book as it is very dear to my heart!

We will finish Chapter 18 The Detectives!

Soon the boys were finished eating and helped clear the table.  They went outside to play as Robert and Amelia cleaned up the kitchen.  Amelia told Robert of the day’s horrible events.   He now understood why his wife was so upset.  He became angrier as Amelia told him what Mr. Hodges had done and attempted to do with her parents.

“He is pure evil, Robert!”  Amelia stated as chills ran through her.  “I fear for my parents, but they insisted on staying there.  My Daddy is going to play detective which is even more terrifying to me.  Mr. Hodges is not playing here!  He is out to save his reputation and the facade of Glenview no matter who he hurts in the process.  I felt like I was in a nightmare today and just needed to wake up.  This is like a horror movie, but it’s not a fake movie, it is very real and right here in Mason Creek!”

Robert could see that Amelia was very scared.  He again pulled her into his loving arms and just held her.  He assured her that he would not let anything happen to her or her parents.  “We will get them home!” Robert promised. “I will go get them now if you want me to!”  He declared.

“No, Robert, Mr. Henderson has to have a little time.  He’s going to the state attorney in morning, in the meantime I need to go and meet with Nurse Applegate to see if she can tell me more about what is going on.  She seems to be legit.  I can only hope that she is!”

“I’ll go with you!  We can drop the boys at my sisters!” Robert suggested.

“I don’t think that is the best thing.  Nurse Applegate is probably as afraid and untrusting as I am.  She may just close up and not share anything if you come.  I believe I need to go alone.   Don’t you?”

“Maybe you’re right, but I don’t like it.  I just want you to be extra careful.  If you suspect anything, I want you to promise me you will call me immediately to let me know!  I will come to you, okay?”  Robert ordered.

“I promise Robert! I love you with my whole heart!”  Amelia said as she leaned into Robert to kiss him tenderly.

“I love you Mrs. Steele!” Robert replied and gently kissed Amelia on her nose.

They laughed and went outside to be with the boys.

Soon Amelia kissed the boys and Robert as she sped out of the driveway.  She wanted to run by Glenview and check on your parents one more time.  As she arrived in the parking lot she glanced up to Mr. Hodges office.  She could see lights on, so she assumed that he was probably still at Glenview.  She became nervous as she once again thought of her parents being harmed by him.  Amelia practically ran to get inside the building.  Once inside the nurse at the station was on the telephone, so Amelia smiled and went on toward her parent’s room.  She gently tapped the closed door.  However, there was no answer.  Amelia almost in a panic, immediately pushed the door open to find both her parents snuggled up tightly. They were sound asleep. She watched them awhile. Her parents seemed so peaceful.  Amelia thought to wake them, but instead she smiled tenderly and backed out of room.

When she backed out of their room, she headed down the hall when Nurse Applegate came around the corner.  “Well, hello again!” Nurse Applegate said with a friendly smile.

“Hello, I was just checking on them! They were sound asleep.  I couldn’t bring myself to wake them to let them know that I came by to check on them. They just looked so sweet and peaceful” Amelia stated.

“Yes I know, they seem to be exhausted as I checked on them a short while ago. They were resting. They are so sweet. I noticed that they were all snuggled up together.”

“Nurse Applegate, you will never find another couple so in love as my parents are with each other!  They act like teenagers!  They can’t keep their hands off of one another!” Amelia said with a chuckle.  “I am glad that they are together.  If they weren’t I would move in here myself whether Mr. Hodges liked it or not!” Amelia stated rather defiantly.

“Don’t worry, Ms. Steele, I will take good care of them!  I promise!” Nurse Applegate said as she too seemed a little defiant.

“Thank you so much.  I feel a little better knowing that they have someone as caring as you!  Amelia replied, as she found herself really liking Nurse Applegate.  She then whispered, “How soon will you get out of here? I have a few errands, but will be at the place we talked about.”

“My shift ends at around Nine o’clock. I will meet you as soon as I can get there!”

“That sounds wonderful!  Again I want to thank you for taking good care of those two lovebirds in there.  They are two amazing people. I would love for you to get to know them better!  Maybe after all this mess is over, you can!”

“I would love that!” Nurse Applegate agreed. “Go, get out of here and run your errands.  They are fine!”

Amelia smiled as she came around and corner. Immediately her smile left as Mr. Hodges was at the nurse’s desk.  At first Amelia was going to wait to see if he left, but then she thought to herself that she wanted him to see her.  She wanted him to see that she was on her guard.  He would not be able to do anything without going through her first.

As she walked down the hallway to the nurse’s station, she never stopped.  As she kept on walking both hers and Mr. Hodges eyes met.  The glares from both of them were cold. Soon Mr. Hodges’s developed an evil glint as he grinned a devilish grin while Amelia walked by him.   She never slowed up and acknowledged his presence. She continued walking out of the sliding glass doors, down the sidewalk to the parking lot.  She could barely put her key in the door because her hands were trembling so badly.  However, once inside her car, she took deep cleansing breaths and calmed herself down.

Part 38 If Oak Trees Could Talk!

Hello Everyone, I am so glad that you chose to join me again on my Video Blogs of my Romance/Suspense Novel If Oak Trees Could Talk!  I love all the new people that have found me and made comments.  Thank you so much for “liking” the Video Blogs.  If you‘ve just recently found me, I wanted to say these blogs were really just me trying something different with my Romance/Suspense novel.  I personally just wanted it to be read, so I thought I would read it myself and video blog it.  I wanted to send out a big Thank you, again to all of you that have hung in here with me since the Part 1 of If Oak Trees Could Talk!  You are amazing and I am so grateful!

Today, we begin in…..Chapter 18 The Detectives!

The doors to Glenview opened to allow Amelia to walk outside.  The humidity in the air was thick and heavy and felt moist against her skin.  The heat seemed to hit her in the face when she stepped out of the air conditioning.   A warm brisk wind was blowing and Amelia could see that there were several storm clouds gathering in the westward sky. She ran quickly to her parent’s vehicle as rain began to fall.  When she climbed in the front seat she started the car and put it in gear.  Suddenly there was a tap on the passenger side window.  It was Mr. Henderson from the Mason Creek Times.  Amelia immediately bent over the front seat and opened the door.

“Hurry, get it!” She ordered.

“Hello, Ms. Amelia, how are you doing?”  Mr. Henderson asked as he obeyed Amelia. “I’m sorry that I am soaked.  I should have listened to my old knee this morning! Every time it is going to rain, my knee will act up.

Mr. Gerald Henderson and his wife Sophia were also lifelong friends to her parents.  Henry and Mr. Henderson had known each other since they were young boys.  They had gone through twelve years of school together.  Mr. Henderson’s wife was the Mason Creek Elementary School librarian.  Surprised that Mr. Henderson was at Glenview, Amelia was a little curious as to why he seemed to be waiting to speak to her.

“Hello Mr. Henderson, I am sorry but I was a little startled when you knocked on my window.  This has been a crazy day. May I help you with something?”  Amelia asked, but just as she asked the question she looked up to see Mr. Hodges staring at them through his office window.  She became very upset.  “Mr. Henderson, we can’t talk here.  I am sorry.  I do need to speak to you on an urgent matter, but not here and not now!”  Amelia said as she looked down as to pretend that she had not noticed Mr. Hodges.

“Amelia, I know about your concerns. It is quite alright.   May I possibly meet you at your home?  I do not want to meet at my office, for I have the same concerns that you do.”  Mr. Henderson stated.  “Your husband told me that you needed to possibly speak to me.”

“Yes, but I am supposed to meet someone that works at Glenview.  I just met her today, but she wanted to meet with me.  I can possibly meet with you tomorrow!”  Amelia suggested.

“Tomorrow it is.  I will call you tomorrow morning and we will go from there!” Mr. Henderson agreed.

By the time that Mr. Henderson had gotten into the car with Amelia, the sky opened up.  It was a typical summer storm in Georgia which consisted of strong gusty winds,  roaring thunder that shook the whole ground, vivid flashes of lightning and  torrential rains that pounded the ground so hard that water ran orange from the muddy Georgia clay.  The run off of water quickly flooded the parking lot of Glenview and continued to run out into the streets.  Amelia was going to wait it out, but when she looked up Mr. Hodges was still watching her and Mr. Henderson from his office window.  It wasn’t long until Amelia saw Sheriff Eugene drive by the main entrance of the parking lot.  She wondered if Eugene’s driving by was meant to intimidate her.  When the rain slacked down a little bit, Amelia backed out of the parking space.

“Where’s your car parked Mr. Henderson?”  Amelia asked.

“Well, Ms. Amelia, frankly I never drove, I walked!  Guess I should have paid attention to the weather huh?”  Mr. Henderson said with a little giggle.

“No problem,” Amelia said.  Where do you want to go? Do you want me to drop you at the Times building or home?”  Amelia asked as she drove quickly out of the parking lot. Either place that Mr. Henderson chose was on her way home.   Just as she was pulling out, Eugene drove by rather slowly.  It wasn’t good because he could probably see who was in the car with her much better than Mr. Hodges could through his office window and the rain

“Well Mr. Henderson since we are together anyway and I’ve got to take my time, why did you come to see me?” Amelia asked as she drove very slowly on the rain slick roads.  She noticed that Mr. Henderson kept looking down at his side mirror.  She felt he too was concerned about Sheriff Eugene seeing them.

“Ms. Amelia, I have heard stories for years coming out of Glenview. I understand that you and your parents had a run in with Mr. Hodges?  Well, young lady, I do not wish to worry you, believe me.  Let me just say that he is not at all a nice man. If you’ve crossed him then I am sure that you’ve already found that out.  He’s always kept all of his dealings covered up pretty good but lately he has been pretty sloppy.  For one thing he has that idiot Sheriff Eugene in cahoots with him who has let this Sheriff’s job go straight to his head.  Both of these men are power hungry! Mr. Hodges is just like Glenview’s building. From the outside everything appears to be all pristine and beautiful but on the inside it is full of rot and disgust.  I intend on exposing him for what and who he really is! Ms. Amelia, I need to hear about everything that you know!”  Mr. Henderson stated.

Amelia still looking ahead said, “Frankly, Mr. Henderson, how do I know that I can trust you?  I don’t know who all is in with him on this thing?  I, of course, am concerned about all of the residents in Glenview, but my parents are who I am most concerned about.  I tried my best to get them to come home with me today and never return.  When I looked upon Mr. Hodges face, I saw pure evil. I fear for my parent’s safety!”  Amelia stated with tears in her eyes.

“Ms. Amelia, I understand your concerns, and yes you should be very concerned.  I have known your parents longer than you have.  Henry is a dear friend of mine. I want to put Mr. Hodges behind bars where he belongs.  I, however, need evidence and proof that he is doing what we both know he is!” Mr. Henderson convinced.

Part 35 If Oak Trees Could Talk!

Part 35 If Oak Trees Could Talk!

Thank you once again for reading along with me or “tuning in” each week to If Oak Trees Could Talk! Occasionally I’ve been doing other blogs along with this one to break it up a bit, so I am grateful if you have stuck in here with me. This was a trial run on doing Video blogs and of course, I picked the longest book that I’ve written to do it. However, I’ve enjoyed it and really hope that you have as well. We pick back up in Chapter 17 The Tyrant!

Chapter 17

The Tyrant!

Mr. Hodges still glaring into Amelia’s eyes realized that she meant exactly what she was telling him. He cleared his throat once more and began to walk away. “Stay here and I will direct the staff to prepare another suite immediately!”

“Oh and Mr. Hodges, it had better be top-notch, clean and updated with a bright clean décor. It must also have a window or windows that will let real light into the room.   Honestly, Sir, I am expecting a freaking honeymoon suite!” Amelia demanded in light of her obvious victory as Mr. Hodges stomped away down the long hallway until he disappeared.

Amelia took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down before she went back into the room with her parents. She trembled as she had truly comforted evil itself. Finally she walked back into the horrible room.   With a gentle smile she proceeded to usher her parents out of the room into the hallway.

“Mr. Hodges is making something better available for you.” Amelia stated. He realized how dismal this room was and decided that he would give you a fresher, more updated suite,” Amelia stated rather calmly, even though she was still trembling inside. She then got in the middle of her parents and began escorting them slowly to the front of Glenview from where they had been ever since they both were admitted into Glenview. As she walked along beside them a fear of more retaliation came over her. What did Mr. Hodges plan to do to her parents now?

Mr. Hodges still furious over the confrontation with Amelia, rounded the corner to the nurse’s station where Nurse Wanda stood doing paperwork. He meandered slowly up to her and with cold and calculating eyes whispered, “Nurse Smith, I regret to inform you that Glenview’s Residential Home for the Elderly no longer has need of your services. You are dismissed immediately. You may collect your belongings and leave post haste, please. I will mail to you the remainder of your compensation owed. Thank you.”

Mr. Hodges simply smirked as he knew that Nurse Wanda was the only one who could expose any of the plans that he had for Mr. and Mrs. Tyler. He felt rather proud of himself that there was one less person that would spoil his plans for the rebellious Tyler couple. He also felt that she probably had already warned Mrs. Steele about his threats to treat Henry with medicines to control him, but if there is no witness to the crime than he could quite possibly even get by with murder. He smiled as he imagined himself and Amelia in a boxing ring. He chuckled as he felt that he just dealt a hard blow to Mrs. Steele by firing Nurse Smith. It may not be the knockout blow, but it was enough to let her know who she stepped into the ring with, he thought.

“Mr. Hodges, you can’t be serious?” Nurse Wanda stated. “Surely you can’t be serious about this. I’ve been here at Glenview for nigh on thirty years, where else is there for me to go to in Mason Creek? Please Mr. Hodges, I beg of you, don’t do this!”

“There is no refuting the dismissal, Mrs. Smith. Please go now before I have you physically removed!” Mr. Hodges ordered.

“Well, have me physically removed then! I weigh about three hundred pounds so you better bring in your best to try it, Sir! I am going to have my say Mr. Hodges. I am not leaving here lesson I get to say good-bye to all of my patients, some I’ve had for ten, fifteen years maybe longer.” Nurse Wanda said as she stood her ground.

“Mrs. Smith, I’ve already got the Sheriff coming to remove you, now do you really want this to become ugly?” Mr. Hodges continued to whisper.

“Ugly, who is the ugly one here, Mr. Hodges? Yes I am going to fuss and yell because you are a devil who likes to inflict pain and torment. Don’t think I have not seen the goings on around here! I’ve kept quiet because I thought at first I was just imagining things, but when you told me about Mr. Tyler and what you intended on doing to him, yes Sir, you exposed your evil self to me! After I got to thinking about what you told me that you were going to do to Mr. Tyler, I began thinking about other patients that were doing so much better when all of a sudden they just had a relapse! What caused that relapse Mr. Hodges?   It was you that was behind those dear patients’ relapses! I promise you Mr. Hodges, I will no longer be quiet!” Nurse Wanda shouted as she came out around the nurse’s station where she was going to go see some of her patients including Henry.

All of a sudden the doors opened and in walked Sheriff Eugene Perkins. He left his sheriff’s car running with siren blaring and lights on in the front entrance.   He had intended on putting Nurse Wanda in the car very quickly if she didn’t leave on her own. Eugene was all red faced when walking through the door for Nurse Wanda, for like Ms. Amelia, Nurse Wanda was also a longtime family friend to his parents. He never liked arresting friends but the town where he was a sheriff was small, unfortunately for Eugene, everybody knew everybody.   Just about everyone he arrested was at least an acquaintance if not a close friend to either Sheriff Eugene or his parents.

When Nurse Wanda saw Sheriff Eugene walk in, she stopped her rampage for a brief time long enough to scold him like she would one of her own children. When he was little she babysat him many times, so she felt like she had the right.

“Seriously, Eugene, you are here to arrest me? Um, um, what would your Momma and Daddy say? I’ve put powder on your behind, Boy! You’ve not got anything that I haven’t already seen. Why you want to go and get all mixed up with Mr. Hodges for? He’s going down, Eugene! He is medicated the patients here to keep them here longer and to extract more money out of them. The Good Lord only knows what other horrible things he’s done to these poor helpless folks. He is an evil man Eugene. I hate to see you go down with him because you’re all power hungry. Boy you’ve been raised better than this! I hate to think of the shame that you’re going to bring to your pour Momma, bless her pour little heart!”

Just when Nurse Wanda had begun speaking Amelia and her parents popped around the corner. They too heard all of the commotion. However, it did not take Amelia long to figure out what had happened. When she looked over at Mr. Hodges he wore a smirk of victory on his face. It was sickening to Amelia. She wasn’t going to stand and do nothing!

“Arrest her, Sheriff Perkins, do your job!” Mr. Hodges ordered as Nurse Wanda’s shouts had alerted many of the residents and their guest to the commotion that she was raising. Pretty soon the hallway filled up with spectators to watch and to listen to what was going to happen next. It was a real show for many of the residents. Nothing as exciting as this event had ever happened to them since they came to Glenview.   Many of them who were in their right minds knew all along that Mr. Hodges was an evil man. To save themselves, several patients acted as though they were mentally challenged and senile to prevent him from keeping them in a medicated state. They wanted to hear and see if anything was going to be done about him?

“Okay, folks back into your suites, everything is fine here! No cause for alarm! Go back now to your suites!” Mr. Hodges demanded. The last thing he wanted was for the patients visitors to hear that he may have some shady dealings when it come to their loved ones being placed in Glenview.

Part 34 If Oak Trees Could Talk!

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted a video blog, but here I am again and so glad that you chose to join me today! I appreciate you so much and am thrilled to be able to share my Romance/Suspense story If Oak Trees Could Talk with you. Today we begin in Chapter 17 entitled The Tyrant!

Chapter 17

The Tyrant!

Amelia’s gut told her that nothing about Mr. Hodges was pleasant or genuine. She didn’t trust him and had intended on making even more visits to Glenview in the next few weeks. As she and her parents left his office they went straight to the nurse’s station as they waited for a new room to be prepared. They felt like they won a little victory today by Mr. Hodges allowing Henry and Helen to at least stay in the same room. When Nurse Wanda saw them she immediately ran and hugged them. She was sorry that Mr. and Mrs. Tyler had to return, but she was delighted to see them.

“Mr. Tyler, you sure did give us all a scare!” She scolded, now why did you go and do that to this old nurse, don’t you know I’m not getting any younger. How are you Mrs. Tyler, you are simply in bloom with the color in your cheeks. You both sure are looking good. Yes, real good!” Nurse Wanda stated as she let out a giggle!

“Nurse Wanda, we apologize for putting you in this awkward situation, but Henry has been like a caged bird. Going home to be in familiar surroundings was the best possible medicine for him. He is doing so much better. He’s coming back to us.   Thank you so much for all that you’ve done for us. We truly love you sweet lady!” Helen replied as she grabbed Nurse Wanda’s hand and patted it gently.

“Now that is the best news we’ve heard around these parts in, Lord, I don’t even know how long! Both you and Mr. Tyler are getting better, that’s the important thing!” Nurse Wanda continued. She started to warn the Tyler’s once again, but just as she began to whisper the words, “You all keep an eye out for Mr.”

“Nurse Smith, may I speak to you immediately, please?” Mr. Hodges interrupted.

“Yes, Sir, I’ll be right there, Sir!” Nurse Wanda yelled as she squeezed Ms. Amelia’s hand. She then whispered. “Watch, Ms. Amelia!”

Amelia, of course, was confused but at the same time she somehow knew that Nurse Wanda was warning her to keep an eye out on Mr. Hodges. Again, Amelia did not trust him and felt like he would try to retaliate against her parents for putting Glenview’s reputation at risk, but Amelia really had no idea how evil Mr. Hodges really was.

Mr. Hodges told Nurse Wanda to go to a patient’s room several rooms down while he spoke once again to Mr. and Mrs. Tyler.

“Come with me, please!” He commanded.

The Tyler’s followed obediently along with Amelia by their side. Mr. Hodges led them down several long corridors to the very end room. As he walked rather quickly in front of them, Helen was having a little difficulty keeping up, but still she pressed on without uttering the first complaint. When all of them were finally at the end of the hall, Mr. Hodges said with a defiant smirk, “Viola! Here is your suite Mr. and Mrs. Tyler! Oh, and sadly, I must inform you that because of the new suite arrangements, it will no longer be possible for Nurse Smith to be your attending nurse. Nurse Melba Applegate will be your attending nurse on this floor of Glenview from now on. I am sure she will serve you very well.”

Amelia’s face burned with anger as she seen the obvious revengeful attitude that Mr. Hodges had toward her parents. She became very alarmed that he would even try to harm them in some way. She however, held her tongue while in her parent’s presence. As Henry and Helen entered their new suite, they were not surprised in its appearance. They too felt that Mr. Hodges would go to any lengths to try to punish them for their behavior, but they truly did not expect what they saw.

There was nothing new whatsoever other than the location of the room that Mr. Hodges called a suite. At first glance the pale soiled gray walls boasted some similitude of a stenciled Fleur De Lis design pattern throughout. The design had probably been placed onto the walls when the facility had been built. There were not any windows to let any natural light shine through from the outside. The only light source with the exception of a lame floor lamp that had a dingy beige shade in the corner was one florescent light fixture mounted to the ceiling that held two long while parallel light bulbs. The furniture décor consisted of one high back worn upholstered chair that was pushed into a corner to the left of the room. Opposite the high back upholstered chair was two straight back side chairs that slide under a small wooden table. The table set to the right of the bed. The bed which might have been full size, from all appearances seemed to be older than the wall paper. The heavy metal frame sprawled out like a spider in the middle of the room. The bed had two legs on each side that was placed on the floor, however the bed also had two more legs on each side that were equipped with casters and wheels that locked. Finally built into the wall there was a wooden wardrobe and a chest of drawers. Once inside the tiny room, only then could a small door be seen behind the entrance door that led to a rest room.

As Henry and Helen looked over the dismal room, Amelia became more and more enraged. She looked at her precious parents who had done nothing but help neighbors and friends their whole entire lives and became sickened that Mr. Hodges chose such a room for them to recover in while they were at Glenview. How dare he try to belittle and punish her parents with such open detest and think he would get by with it.

“Mr. Hodges, may I see you in the hallway? Now please!” Amelia demanded as her heart began beating faster and she could feel her face burning. She trembled inside with anger at the thoughts that Mr. Hodges would stoop so low.   She tried to calm herself down as to speak to him without screaming. When Mr. Hodges looked at Amelia, he obeyed immediately and met her demands.

“Mr. Hodges, I do not know what you are trying to prove at Glenview, but this so called suite is totally unacceptable. I will not stand by and let you make a mockery out of my parents! I will have Mr. Henderson in this place so quickly that you will not know what hit you! Do I make myself clear?” Amelia spewed.

“Now, Mrs. Steele, you must realize that we do not honor the request of spouses’ cohabitating in the same room here at Glenview. We are trying to accommodate your request. Unfortunately, this suite is the only one that is available.” Mr. Hodges lied.

“Well, you better make something else become available. Mr. Hodges, you will not humiliate my parents in any way, do I make myself clear. I just wonder if you would do this to my parents, whose others parents are you mistreating at Glenview. Wouldn’t it be interesting to find how who else is privileged to get these kinds of luxury suites?” Amelia threatened.

Mr. Hodges angry himself, cleared his throat and glared at her with pure evil in his eyes. He then whispered in a tone that almost sounded like a growl to Amelia, “Don’t you ever threaten me again lady. You, Mrs. Steele, do not know who you are dealing with, and neither does your kooky senile old parents! Go tell your Mr. Henderson anything that you want to tell him, but let me forewarn you, that it will be your parents that pay the ultimate price! Do I make myself clear, Mrs. Steele?”

“Perfectly clear indeed Mr. Hodges and obviously you do not know who you are dealing with either. I demand that you place my parents in a decent room with a window right now and that Nurse Wanda be reinstated as their nurse. She knows my parents and my parents trust her. I see what you’re trying to do by isolating my parents. I will not stand for it! I demand you do it now!” Amelia screamed.

“If I won’t give in to your demands, Mrs. Steele, how then shall you threaten me?” Mr. Hodges once again whispered.

“Watch me, Mr. Hodges. Watch me turn my threats into action!” Amelia boldly stated. “Obviously you do not know about all of the ties to Mason Creek and Mason Creeks residents that my parents hold. My father has owned and run the local Hardware store longer than I have been alive.   They know practically everyone in this little town, with the only exception being those who have possibly moved into town while they’ve been in Glenview. All I would have to do is to let my parent’s friends and neighbors know how they are being mistreated here! How many of their parents or relatives do you have in your facility Mr. Hodges? What affect do you think that might have on your little untainted reputation?” Amelia fired back.

Part 33 If Oak Trees Could Talk!

Welcome to my video blogs of my Romance/Suspense novel If Oak Trees Could Talk! This story was given to me as I sat on my front porch early one morning just being grateful for such a beautiful day. The air was warm and the birds were chirping rather loudly. I had a bird feeder that hung from a huge limb of an Oak Tree in my side yard, as I watched the birds come for seeds, I simply heard in my spirit, “Imagine the stories that old Oak Tree could tell you.” Suddenly I had the story from the beginning to the end, but never knew about all the twist and turns in the middle! This seems to be how I get all of my stories, poems, songs, blogs etc. We are moving right along in the book. It is my sincere hope that you will enjoy it.

Chapter 16 Glenview’s Return!

Mr. Hodges was left speechless and stunned that Henry was so boisterous and that he appeared to be perfectly sane in his thinking and speech. He heard Henry’s threats loud and clear and immediately cleared his throat. Finally he spoke again.

“Well, I am sure this has been a stressful situation for all of us,” Mr. Hodges said in a much calmer tone. “So from this day forward, let’s just put all of this behind us so that we can continue to get everyone well. How does that sound to all of you? And Mrs. Steele, I do apologize for my abruptness and the manner in which I have spoken to you. I know that I have no right to ask this of you, but I wanted to ask you for a favor please. As you know Glenview’s Residential Home for the Elderly has enjoyed a prestigious reputation for its exceptional care of the Elderly. We have had wonderful reviews for not only serving the residents in our own little quaint community of Mason Creek and Mason County, but also in serving many other surrounding counties as well. Pardon me for repeating rumors especially if they are not true, but, Mrs. Steele, It has been rumored that you intend on possibly going to Mr. Henderson down at the Mason Creek Times with a story about our latest events at Glenview. I plead with you to please reconsider. After hearing your reasons behind your parent’s brief departure from Glenview, I intend on dropping all charges against you, of course. In return I would ask you to reconsider taking this story to Mr. Henderson’s paper.   I am sure you have many friends and neighbors who have residents in our little facility that rely on us. It would be devastating to those elderly patients to be sent elsewhere to where their families could no longer visit them as often.”

As Amelia listened, she could really see Mr. Hodges for what he was. He wasn’t the least bit concerned about the Elderly and their families. No, he was more concerned about his reputation and his employment. She knew that Sheriff Eugene ran as fast as he could to tell Mr. Hodges what she had threatened to do. It was, however, only a threat and a ploy that Amelia used simply to buy more free time with her parents.   Amelia knew that Mr. Hodges did speak an element of truth. She would have been devastated if her parents would have had to be sent further away to another facility to where she could not have visited them or interacted with them on a daily basis. Amelia thought a moment. She knew she hit a nerve with the story and had gained leverage, so she decided not to totally surrender to Mr. Hodges demands. She did not trust him. She didn’t know if he planned retaliation against her parents, so she wanted to keep something.

“Mr. Hodges, I think that you would have to prove the charges that you have against me in order for them to stick, but I will assure you for right now the only thing I want is for my parents to be home and well. In order for that to happen, I am demanding that you please place them in the same room. They do not have to be in the same bed, but in the same room. You of all people must admit that my father’s memory in just the past forty-eight hours is remarkable. That is because he has to have my mother by his side. She is better than any rehab or medicines that you could possibly give him.   I will definitely hold off on any news stories to assure that my parents get the best care as usual from Glenview and her staff.”

“Oh well, now Mrs. Steele, your parents demand different types of care. It is totally against the policy of this facility for couples to be placed in the same rooms. We here at Glenview have found it more harmful than helpful.   Mrs. Steele, I assure you that your parents will receive the best care possible!” Mr. Hodges said with a crooked smile.

“No Sir, Amelia stood her ground. I should have insisted that they be put together in the same room at the onset of them coming to Glenview. I will not take no for an answer, Mr. Hodges.” Amelia said without blinking. Her face became cold as ice and Mr. Hodges knew that his reputation as a Director would be in question if he denied her.

“Very well, Mrs. Steele, I must let you know that this is highly irregular. This agreement must not become open knowledge or we will simply have to separate them again. Do you understand?” Mr. Hodges stated as to leave himself a loophole. However Amelia turned the loophole into a noose.

“Yes, Mr. Hodges, so we will have to make for sure to put a stop to all of those who carry rumors in and out of Glenview, don’t you agree?” She said slyly.

Part 28 If Oak Trees Could Talk

Hello Again! Well we are moving right along as we read If Oak Trees Could Talk! I hope that if you have been following along that you are enjoying the journey! If you’ve just found us, then it is my hope that you will take the time to either listen or read the archived blogs to where you do not feel like you’ve missed out on any of the mushy stuff! Today we are nearing the end of Chapter 14 The Family Gathering! However, we still have a little ways to go.   You might as well pour yourself a nice cup of coffee or tea and get all comfy as we continue reading.

Chaper 14

The Family Gathering!

“It’s wonderful, Daddy. I always love it when you tease me. I love your stories. The boys love them as well. Daddy, they have missed you so much. They were excited and thrilled to be at Gramps and Gramma’s last night because we were together again! They told me that you always did special things with them, such as your yard trips.   They miss all of those times with you. They had not been in this house for months, but last night when they were here, they really enjoyed it. It was only because you and Momma were home and down at the Oak tree. Both of you are the life of this house and this place. It’s you and Momma that makes this place a home.” Amelia said as she began to tear up.

Robert and the boys pulled up in the driveway just as Amelia was speaking of them. The boys flung open the car doors and ran into the house. They ran to Gramps and hugged him and then on to Gramma. Amelia stepped out to see if Robert needed a hand with the food. He was so prepared he had paper plates and plastic forks, the works just so that they could spend time together instead of cleaning up the kitchen after the meal. He also had a thermos of piping hot coffee just in case there was none.

“Baby, you thought of everything! I love you so much, let me take that thermos.” Amelia said as she leaned in and gave Robert a quick kiss. “Momma and Daddy are going to love this!”

When Robert stepped inside the house, Helen grabbed him and squeezed him tightly. He still had his hands full of food when Henry moved forward and extended his hand for a warm hand shake, but then he just grabbed Robert and gave him a big bear hug.   Robert unloaded all of the bags onto the counter and then shook Henry’s hand.   Everyone was so thrilled to be back together.

“Oh man, I smell Elma’s don’t I?” Henry asked.

“Yep,” Dylan said as he began pulling food from the bags. “Sausage gravy, biscuits, eggs, grits, and bacon, yummy, breakfast is served! Just like you always served it for us Gramps!”

“Man I think I will run away more often,” Henry said with a smile.

“I wish you could Gramps!” Robbie said. “We have missed you and Gramma so much.”

“Don’t encourage him, Robbie,” Helen stated. “He would be over here every day when the nurses at Glenview turn their backs!”

All of the family chuckled, but deep down Helen knew Henry would escape again if he felt he had reason to. It was good for all of them to be together. They each took their regular places at the dining room table as they’ve done numerous times before. Even though this was Elma’s food, you would have thought it to be a home cooked Thanksgiving meal, which indeed it was! The table seated Gramps and Gramma side by side of course at one end, Amelia and Robert side by side at the opposite end and Dylan and Robbie in the middle of each side. As they ate, they laughed, and appreciated every second of the last minutes together before Henry and Helen went back to Glenview. Each of them pretended that the dread of the Patriarch and Matriarch of the family leaving wasn’t weighing heavy upon them. The time came, however, sooner than any of them wanted it to, for Gramps and Gramma to return to Glenview.

“Amelia do you want me to drive you and your parents back to Glenview?” Robert whispered while Amelia was cleaning up the dining room table.

“I really thought about it Honey. I think I will drive Daddy’s car. It probably needs to have someone drive it anyway. What do you think?” Amelia asked.

“Sounds good, but are you going to be okay?” Robert comforted.

“I will just have to be okay, now won’t I?” Amelia stated with a sigh.

“Well, if you get there and need me, I am going to stick around the house today with the boys. I think it will be good for the boys just to have a day with their old Dad.”

“That sounds great. You can make the day a fun day for them. I wish I could spend the day with you guys,” Amelia replied. “But soon, we will all be together again.”

Helen walked into the kitchen. She did not appear to be half as upset about going back to Glenview as Amelia was. She and Henry had resolved to go back and do what they needed to do.

“Well, Daughter, let’s get this show on the road! Your Daddy and I have decided to take Glenview by storm Sweetie! They won’t know what hit them! We will be home in a few weeks and all will be well! Are you ready?” Helen asked impatiently.

“Yes, Momma, I guess I am ready if you and Daddy are. Where’s Daddy?” Amelia asked.

“Oh, he and the boys have gone out in the yard for a bit,” Helen said with a tender smile at having mentioned the boys.   “He probably just wants to reassure them that we will be a family again. We do love those two more than life!” Helen said softly. “He also wanted to go see his friend one more time before we left today. He thought maybe that the Oak tree could help him remember a little more before he left!”

“Well, okay, I will go get the car out of the garage. I thought we would drive Daddy’s car if that is okay. It really needs to be driven and this beautiful Sunny morning would be a perfect opportunity. What do you think?”

“Lovely, it will be just lovely.” Helen agreed.
