If Oak Trees Could Talk what stories could they tell? If she were the old Oak tree in Henry William Tyler’s side yard she would tell humorous and heartwarming romantic stories, but unfortunately all stories told by the old Oak tree cannot always be humorous or romantic. When Helen, the love of Henry’s life winds up in a nursing home, Henry becomes heartbroken and lonely. Unfortunately, in order to deal with his emotions, he develops temporary amnesia and winds up in the same nursing home. The couple, determined to leave Glenview’s Residential Home for the Elderly will do anything to resume their passionate pursuit of love and reclaim their lives. Henry discovers a key to unlocking his memory bank by revisiting the old Oak tree in his mind, as well as a few other unexpected ways. Who better to help him find his way home than the old Oak who knew all there was to know about Henry?
Have you just had something to come up that prevented you from doing something even though you really wanted to do it! That was the past week when it came to doing my regular Video Blog of If Oak Trees Could Talk! Both my husband and I ended up catching a mean head cold or a series of allergy attacks. Needless to say I sounded like I was talking through my nose and was hoarse because my nose ran and I coughed so much. Chapter 21
The Final Plans
The morning came in bright and cheery as Amelia’s feet hit the floor. She paraded off to the shower to get her day started. When she came out of the bathroom, Robert was still lying in bed asleep. Amelia looked at him with such love. He was her rock. He supported her in everything that she had ever wanted to do. As she stood just staring at him, he opened his eyes to her tender smile. He yawned and stretched and smiled back.
“Good morning, was I drooling or something? What’s so funny that you were looking at me with that Henry Tyler grin of yours?” Robert asked as he chuckled a little.
Amelia walked over to the bed and climbed in. She sprawled him as she bent over and kissed him. Robert shivered as her long cold dripping hair touched his chest. She laughed out loud as Robert let out a yell. He then rolled her over onto her back and tickled her unmercifully until she begged him to stop. He tenderly kissed her. He rolled back off of her and lay beside her. They held hands as she told him of her plans for the day. She was going to go immediately to check on her parents. After that she was going to speak to Mr. Henderson about coming to their house. She was going to invite Nurse Melba Applegate to come to their house as well. Amelia wanted Melba to be able to share with Mr. Henderson about all that she knew about Mr. Hodges and the Scioto County Nursing Home in private.
“What time will you come home, then?” Robert asked. “I would like to be here to hear all that is said, so that I can help us figure out our next move!” He continued.
“I will try to be home when you get home from the Hardware store! How’s that! I need to make up a few appetizers for our company! I just do not want to set the meeting in town in case Mr. Hodges has more people like Sheriff Eugene working for him. I want this to be top secret until Mr. Henderson can present the evidence we have to the Attorney. I am just hoping that we will have enough on Mr. Hodges to go forward and that he is immediately arrested. If not, then my parents along with Nurse Melba’s father could be at great risk. Robert, I can’t believe this is going on right here in Mason Creek.” Amelia said with a sad sigh. “If I didn’t know it to be true, no one could have convinced me that this was happening. One thing I can say about Mr. Hodges is that he knows how to direct Glenview very efficiently as to not draw any unwanted attention to himself. He’s never presented Glenview as being anything other than a top of the line care facility which may be, until you cross him. I guess I just wonder why others have never came forward? Surely others suspected wrong doing at times. I mean if suddenly my father who has never slept all the time, started sleeping or was zoned out all the time, I would be finding out what was going on? I realize many of the older folks in there are really sick and weak. Maybe their loved ones can’t tell the difference between their sicknesses or a medicated state. It is a sad day in Mason Creek. The news of Glenview is going to rock our little peaceful community. You know we’ve just always have had such loving and caring folks here! Who would have imagined someone like Mr. Hodges living here under such pretense?
“Well Honey, unfortunately, I guess it is a sign of the times that we now live in. Things have changed so much since we were youngsters.” Robert stated.
“Speak for yourself Old Man Steele, but I am still a youngster!” Amelia teased.
“Your parents are still youngsters for sure! Heck, they’re younger than we are!” Robert said with a chuckle. “I need to learn some of your Daddy’s romantic tricks if you know what I mean!” Robert said as he gently stroked down Amelia’s wet hair and then her bare shoulder. He gently pressed against Amelia and kissed her passionately.
“Oh Baby, believe me, you have all of the tricks that you need! Amelia stated,” but I am so sorry dear, you won’t get a chance to use any of them this morning! I’ve got to get up out of this bed and get dressed. I’ve got to get the kids up for school and drive to Glenview early. Maybe you can think of some romantic tricks to use on me later! I’ll look forward to them! Amelia promised with another kiss as she sprung up out of the bed and ran to the bathroom.
“See, I obviously do not have the kind of Romantic tricks that your Daddy has. He is how old? He always has your Momma smiling!” Robert continued to tease.
Amelia came and stood in front of Robert at the foot of the bed. She then smiled ear to ear! She laughed out loud as she ran to the bathroom to dry her hair.
“I am determined that I will make that smile of yours real!” Robert promised.
Amelia didn’t style her hair. She just blew it dry and let it go natural. She rushed to get dressed so that she could drink at least one cup of coffee before waking the boys.
“Do you want anything for breakfast?” She asked as she was rushing toward the hallway. “I’m putting on coffee before I wake the boys!”
“Nope, thank you, coffee is fine. I have an early meeting at the Hardware Store with Joe Bentley from Bentley Farm Supply this morning around Nine o’clock. Thought I would bring in Elma’s Biscuits. Meet you down stairs in a few!” Robert answered.
Amelia loved being a wife and a mother. She also loved working at the Hardware store while her boys were at school. It gave her great joy to hear so many of their customers who were mostly neighbors and friends speak adoringly about her parents. She appreciated Mr. Thomas helping out while she was taking care of her parents. Closing the store was never an option with Amelia. She grew up in the hardware store. When she was little, her father had built a nice little cubby or nook for her. He built it right under the stairs. It was her little secret thinking place, or at least when she was small she thought of it as a secret. Amelia wanted to pass the Hardware store on to her children and grandchildren, but as Robert said times were changing so with the world, she only hoped that the boys would want the business when they were grown.
Amelia woke the boys up and pulled out some cereal from the cabinet. She placed the milk and some fresh fruit on the table and waited for the men in her life to come into the kitchen. In the meantime, she opened the kitchen window over the sink and listened to the glorious sounds of the birds singing. It was already quite warm outside. It was sure to be another scorcher today in Mason Creek. Amelia however, had no idea just how hot things were going to get until she went to Glenview.
When the boys came in, she kissed them all. She ran to her car, so that she could get ahead of all the elementary buses. When she got to the Glenview’s parking lot, low and behold who was there but Sheriff Eugene. The thoughts of having to deal with him made Amelia sick to her stomach. She however, refused to be intimidated by him. As she walked up the sidewalk to the entrance of Glenview, Eugene acted as if he would block the entrance. She looked him straight in the eye and continued to walk forward. He just barely moved out of the way, but not before blowing cigarette smoke in her face. Amelia’s face burned as she had never wanted to punch someone so hard in her life. She was furious, but held her tongue and pushed by him. She felt sorry for his parents. She wondered to herself if Eugene knew about all that Mr. Hodges has been doing and if he was party to it.
When she walked into the lobby of Glenview, immediately she saw Mr. Hodges as he was undoubtedly lying to some unsuspecting family about a precious loved one. She wanted to run to them and scream for God’s sake take them somewhere else. She totally refused to look into his evil eyes although she could feel his eyes glaring at her. Amelia walked around the corner to the hallway where her parents were. She knocked on the door to hear a sweet voice on the inside say, “come in please!”
“Good morning sweetheart. How are you this morning?” Helen asked as she held out her arms for Amelia to hug her. Both of her parents were sitting at their little quaint bistro table drinking coffee and eating breakfast.
Amelia walked to her parents and hugged them both! I am fine. What are you having for breakfast?” She asked, “Yummy, it smells like grapefruit and what else?”
“Oatmeal and toast for Henry, just the fruit and toast for me.” Helen answered.
“How are you Daddy? Did you sleep well?” Amelia asked as she noticed Henry was smiling at her.
“I’ve got something for you, Amelia!” Henry said, “But I can’t give it to you yet. The nurse is supposed to be back in here in a minute and I don’t want her to see anything.” Henry continued.
“Oh okay Daddy, Amelia said. She had no clue what he was speaking of. As she looked around she noticed Henry’s old friend was hanging on the wall. She also saw a special quilt that once belonged to her grandmother that was lying across the foot of their bed. The bed was all made up and her parents seemed to be alert and fairly well considering all of the changes that they had gone through in the past few days.

Hello Everyone, Welcome back to my video blog of If Oak Trees Could Talk! I hope that you’ve been enjoying the last days of spring as we are marching quickly into summer. I apologize that I’ve not done this blog for a couple of weeks, but we are moving on and I appreciate you hanging in here with me!
We will finish up Chapter 19 Henry the Spy and Go right into Chapter 20 Common Friends!
When Nurse Applegate knocked on their door, Helen answered once again. The nurse walked in first and then Henry followed. He had a very productive walk. He was sure that he could formulate a plan to spy out the enemy. When he walked into the room his eyes met Helen’s. She saw the slightest curl of his lip into his impish little grin, but Helen was quite upset and never smiled back.
“Here you are Mrs. Tyler. I am delivering Mr. Tyler back to you. I also have your medications.” Nurse Applegate stated.
Both Helen and Henry looked at each other as Nurse Applegate handed the small little pill cup with a couple of pills each in them. Helen noticed right away that Henry had an extra one. Henry could not have told anyone what kinds of medications that he had taken over the past six months or so. Henry watched Helen’s eyes and knew that something was wrong, so they both did as they had planned to do. They would pretend to take the medication by hiding it under their tongues. Helen only wished that Nurse Applegate would leave immediately.
They did just that, Helen handed Henry his pills with a glass of water and Henry pretended to take them. But suddenly Helen thought to ask Nurse Applegate if it was okay for her to take hers on an empty stomach.
“Oh, I am sure it would be fine if you take it after you eat, Mrs. Tyler. Someone from the cafeteria should be bringing your food right up. Just make for sure that you drink a full glass of water with them okay? Especially Mr. Tyler’s it looks as though his doctor has prescribed him something new for his severe allergies.
“Yes Nurse Applegate I sure will do that.” Helen promised as she flashed Henry a strange look.
“Is there anything else that I can get you before I leave for the night?” Nurse Applegate asked. I have to meet someone around Nine o’clock or so and it is Eight-thirty right now.
“No Sweetie, we will be fine. Will we see you tomorrow?” Helen asked.
Suddenly someone knocked on the door. Both Helen and Henry flashed each other a frightened glance that Nurse Applegate could not help but notice. She knew that they were probably shaken up from the ordeal that they had just gone through. So she reassured them, “I’m sure that is your trays!” Nurse Applegate said with an understanding smile as she opened the door.
Sure enough it was the kitchen leaving Henry and Helen’s Banana sandwiches. Nurse Applegate took the tray and placed it on the little bistro table.
“Bon appétit, your gourmet meals awaits!” she teased with a smile. Now to answer your question Mrs. Tyler, yes, I will be here tomorrow. Looks like you and Mr. Tyler are stuck with me while you remain here. Tonight the Nurse at the front desk, Nurse Warren will check in on you. She will not step inside unless you need her to. It is totally up to you. Goodnight and have a peaceful night. I know that you both must be exhausted.”
“Goodnight, thank you for everything!” Helen said as the nurse walked out their door. Henry immediately spit the pills out into the little cup that Nurse Applegate gave him. They were bitter in his mouth, but had not dissolved. When Helen saw them, she said, “The little white pill is one that you have been taking but that big white one is a new one. Do not take it Henry!” Helen ordered. “You must hide them somewhere until we can give them to Amelia tomorrow. Severe Allergies, what a horrible lie!”
Chapter 20
Common Friends
When Nurse Applegate walked through the sliding doors to exit Glenview’s Residential Home for the Elderly, the air felt fresh and crisp after the earlier thunderstorm. She took in a deep breath as she loved the way the air smelled after a rain. There were still standing puddles of muddy orange water in the parking lot. She walked this way and that to avoid them until she got to her car. Once she was in her car she began to think of what she would tell Amelia. She had to protect her father just as Amelia was trying to protect her parents from Mr. Hodges. Nurse Applegate put her car into gear and drove directly to Maggie’s Pie and Coffee to meet Amelia. She dreaded talking about her experiences with Mr. Hodges, but looked forward to really getting to know Amelia. Nurse Applegate hoped to gain a friend in Amelia as they had much in common and she never knew anyone in Mason Creek other the elderly folks at Glenview.
Amelia arrived at Maggie’s Pie and Coffee before Nurse Applegate had. She took the liberty of ordering Ms. Maggie’s famous apple pie for both she and Nurse Applegate. Amelia had a trying day and it felt good to just sip on a steaming hot cup of coffee. She spanned the room to see if anyone was there that she knew. The boys coach and wife were sitting in a corner booth. Amelia took the time to thank them for keeping the boys for them during her Daddy’s escape. Just as she was headed back to her seat at the counter where she had been sitting Nurse Applegate walked in. Amelia greeted her with a smile. She turned to the counter and asked Maggie if she could bring another cup of coffee and the slices of pie to a back table. Nurse Applegate followed as Amelia lead.
“Hello Nurse Applegate, how are you?” Amelia asked to begin conversation.
“Please call me Melba, I’ve been a nurse all day, and now I just want to be Melba!” Nurse Applegate said with a chuckle.
“Sure, I like that much better anyway.” Amelia replied.
“Call me Amelia please. Mrs. Steele sounds like I am iron lady!” Amelia said as they both giggled.
“How did my parents do after I left?” Amelia asked. “I hope they are adjusting well, you know everything was new to them, no offense, but even you are new. I just worried about them as I didn’t want Daddy to become confused.”
“Well, honestly they seem to adjust to the room pretty well, but Mr. Tyler was a little disoriented this evening. I surmised it was because he had not had any of his meds today. They also had not had anything to eat since you were with them, so I made for sure they ordered them something before the cafeteria closed. Mr. Tyler walked with me to the cafeteria and everything.” Melba reported to Amelia.
“Really, that sounds a little weird!” Amelia said with a confused look on her face. “Did he leave Momma alone?”
“Yes, he left Mrs. Tyler alone for the length of time it took us to make our trip. I said trip because the reason he wanted to go was because he told me he wanted to see an old friend! I, of course, thought that he might have been talking about another patient, but instead he wanted to go back to his old room. Maybe it was because it was familiar to him, but then once he went inside he took a picture from the wall. When I walked in, he was talking to the picture and told his “old friend” that he missed it. I have seen this behavior Amelia in a lot of amnesia patients. They get better, but out of the blue, they can revert back. I assumed again it was because he had not had his meds.” Melba tried to comfort.
“Well, he is not as crazy as you may think, Melba!”
“Oh, please I did not mean to imply that he was crazy!” Melba said apologetically.
“Oh, excuse me, wrong choice of words on my part. Let me explain. My Daddy grew up in a house that was built by my Great Great Grandfather. In the side yard of this house is a huge old Oak tree that my Daddy calls his old friend. The picture on the wall in his room is a picture I brought him because somehow the tree seems to comfort him and help him. I know that sounds crazy, but I was desperate to do anything that I could to help him come back to us.” Amelia explained.
“Ah, that is the sweetest thing. Well, it seems to have worked. I saw him hugging that picture just as though he was hugging a person. The look on his face was priceless!” Melba shared.

Today we begin in a new chapter of If Oak Trees Could Talk!
Chapter 19
Henry the Spy
Henry had awakened to his sweet Helen lying next to him. He smiled at her and gently removed his arm from underneath her. He could see that it was beginning to get dark and wondered how long they had slept. Their room was strange to Henry and he became a little disoriented again. He hated the feeling of panic that overwhelmed him. He walked to the window and could see that it had been raining. He looked outside to the beautiful gardens and at first he thought that he could have been home, but nothing else seemed familiar. He needed his old friend to help him.
He sat down at the end of the small couch and pictured the old Oak tree in his mind. Immediately he was there under her branches, safe and carefree. Suddenly the flood of memories of the past few days came back to him. He smiled as he relived the beautiful time spent with Helen under the Oak tree and then in the sanctity of their home. He also thought of Amelia, Robert, and the grand boys as they were his heart. Suddenly as if a candle was lit in a dark room, Henry remembered Mr. Hodges and what he threatened to do and even attempted to do to them. He was angered and intended on doing something about it.
A plan, Henry thought, I have to come up with a plan. Henry tried to remember the time he spent in the service. His job was to be somewhat of a spy, in that he had to secretly locate the enemy’s location in order for his battalion of soldiers to plan their attacks. Henry was nicknamed “The Ghost” by his fellow comrades and friends in the service. He had gotten so good at his job that he could practically walk into the enemy’s camp and listen to what they were saying. Of course, he could not understand all of it because of the differences in the language that was spoken, however many times he understood enough to help his battalion win many battles. As he continued to think about what he had to do in the service he tried to apply the same knowledge to Glenview or Mr. Hodges to be more precise. Mr. Hodges was the enemy. Henry needed to scope out the perimeter without being caught and plan his attack!
Helen suddenly rose up in the bed. She was crying out Henry’s name!
“I am right here dear!” Henry said as he rushed to comfort her. “You were just having a bad dream!” He continued.
“Oh, no I wasn’t Henry. We need to get out of this place! We need to go home as soon as possible.” Helen cried.
“Now, now dear, everything is going to be alright. Look at how far we’ve both already come. We have not come this far to be stopped by some crazy maniac on a power trip! I will not allow him to harm you in any way my sweet Helen.” Henry promised.
“Henry I do not want you to go near Mr. Hodges. I seriously believe that he would love to kill you!” She explained as she trembled.
“Now, Helen, that may be so, but Mr. Hodges does not know that The Ghost is here.” Henry said with his little crooked smile.
Helen thought that Henry had reverted back in his mind. She had no idea what Henry specialized in when he was in the service. All she knew was that it was the longest years of her life being without him. Helen felt that being in Glenview without Henry being in his right mind felt almost the same as when he was in the service. The only exception was that she could touch him and see him every day whether he remembered it or not. “Henry are you doing okay?” Helen asked very gingerly as she did not want to upset him. “What or who is the Ghost? I don’t believe in ghost Henry.” Helen stated as she looked into Henry’s eyes to see if he was with her.
“Honey you may not believe in ghost, but you will dear, you will!” Henry said again with a crooked smile.
“Henry what are you up to? I recognize that look when you’re up to something! I don’t want you to go near Mr. Hodges. He is a dangerous man! Promise me Henry!” Helen ordered, but Henry just acted as though he did not hear her or understand.
“Henry, promise me!” Helen once again demanded.
“Okay, Henry promised. I will just let the Ghost handle it!”
Henry took Helen’s face into his hands and kissed her gently. I love you my Helen. There is no one that is going to steal anymore time from us. We will be home very soon. We’ve worked hard to get back what was lost to us. I refuse to lose it again!”
“Yes, Henry, you’ve had to come further than I think I have, but we are here aren’t we!” Helen said with a smile. Just as she had gotten those words out of her mouth there was a knock on the door. She looked at Henry with a frightened look and the color drained out of her face.
“Stay calm dear, do not let on that we suspect a thing!” Henry warned.
Before when someone knocked on the door it was always either Amelia or Nurse Wanda, or possibly Helen’s doctors or her therapist. Now she, like Henry was in very unfamiliar territory and realized how frightened he must have been the past months.
Henry ran and got into bed. He stared straight ahead as he did before when he wasn’t well. Helen didn’t like it but again the knock came at the door!
“Come in!” Helen answered. Soon the door opened and it was Nurse Applegate.
“Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Tyler. Nurse Applegate said as she acted very friendly.
How was your rest? I peeked in on you earlier and you seemed to be resting very well. I didn’t want to disturb you. I just wanted to see if you wanted to order something from the cafeteria before it closed? It will close in the next half hour or so as it is just now Seven-thirty.” She informed.
“We had a good rest dear, thank you! Helen said sincerely. She then looked at Henry who was still staring forward as if he were in deep thought. He never answered or said anything to Nurse Applegate about what he wanted, so Helen did as she had been doing
. “Yes, Sweetie, could we get a couple of banana sandwiches please, one with peanut butter the other one with mayonnaise and maybe some lemon tea?” Helen asked as she placed both her and Henry’s order.
“Is Mr. Tyler okay?” Nurse Applegate asked. “I understand that he is doing better than what he was when he first come in? I would hold in there Mrs. Tyler, sometimes these things have a way of working themselves out.” Nurse Applegate encouraged.
“Yes, he is somewhat better. Helen answered. “We just want to be well and home. I needed to ask you for a favor dear. Could you make for sure that our things from our other rooms will be brought to us right away? There is a huge picture of an old Oak tree framed and hanging on the wall that Henry has to have immediately.” Helen said as she stressed the picture’s importance to Nurse Applegate.
“When I leave here, I will go immediately and check on your things. I will make for sure that the cleaning staff takes his picture from the wall and packs it with the rest of your things. Is there anything else I can do for you?” Nurse Applegate asked as she acted as if she was more than willing to serve Henry and Helen.
“No Sweetie that is all we need.” Helen answered.
“Well, I will return shortly with your meal and your medications. I know that you probably have not had any medications today unless you had some with you when you left yesterday. Did you have any with you?” Nurse Applegate asked.
“Yes, we had our medication, yesterday, before we went home, but none today.” Helen said. She was very hesitant to say anything, as she suspected what Mr. Hodges had been using medications for.
“May I get you anything else Mr. and Mrs. Tyler?
“No, Nurse Applegate, that is all, thank you.” Mrs. Tyler said, but all of a sudden Henry spoke up and said “Good morning, yes I want to go and see my old friend. Let’s go!”

Today, we begin in…..Chapter 18 The Detectives!
The doors to Glenview opened to allow Amelia to walk outside. The humidity in the air was thick and heavy and felt moist against her skin. The heat seemed to hit her in the face when she stepped out of the air conditioning. A warm brisk wind was blowing and Amelia could see that there were several storm clouds gathering in the westward sky. She ran quickly to her parent’s vehicle as rain began to fall. When she climbed in the front seat she started the car and put it in gear. Suddenly there was a tap on the passenger side window. It was Mr. Henderson from the Mason Creek Times. Amelia immediately bent over the front seat and opened the door.
“Hurry, get it!” She ordered.
“Hello, Ms. Amelia, how are you doing?” Mr. Henderson asked as he obeyed Amelia. “I’m sorry that I am soaked. I should have listened to my old knee this morning! Every time it is going to rain, my knee will act up.
Mr. Gerald Henderson and his wife Sophia were also lifelong friends to her parents. Henry and Mr. Henderson had known each other since they were young boys. They had gone through twelve years of school together. Mr. Henderson’s wife was the Mason Creek Elementary School librarian. Surprised that Mr. Henderson was at Glenview, Amelia was a little curious as to why he seemed to be waiting to speak to her.
“Hello Mr. Henderson, I am sorry but I was a little startled when you knocked on my window. This has been a crazy day. May I help you with something?” Amelia asked, but just as she asked the question she looked up to see Mr. Hodges staring at them through his office window. She became very upset. “Mr. Henderson, we can’t talk here. I am sorry. I do need to speak to you on an urgent matter, but not here and not now!” Amelia said as she looked down as to pretend that she had not noticed Mr. Hodges.
“Amelia, I know about your concerns. It is quite alright. May I possibly meet you at your home? I do not want to meet at my office, for I have the same concerns that you do.” Mr. Henderson stated. “Your husband told me that you needed to possibly speak to me.”
“Yes, but I am supposed to meet someone that works at Glenview. I just met her today, but she wanted to meet with me. I can possibly meet with you tomorrow!” Amelia suggested.
“Tomorrow it is. I will call you tomorrow morning and we will go from there!” Mr. Henderson agreed.
By the time that Mr. Henderson had gotten into the car with Amelia, the sky opened up. It was a typical summer storm in Georgia which consisted of strong gusty winds, roaring thunder that shook the whole ground, vivid flashes of lightning and torrential rains that pounded the ground so hard that water ran orange from the muddy Georgia clay. The run off of water quickly flooded the parking lot of Glenview and continued to run out into the streets. Amelia was going to wait it out, but when she looked up Mr. Hodges was still watching her and Mr. Henderson from his office window. It wasn’t long until Amelia saw Sheriff Eugene drive by the main entrance of the parking lot. She wondered if Eugene’s driving by was meant to intimidate her. When the rain slacked down a little bit, Amelia backed out of the parking space.
“Where’s your car parked Mr. Henderson?” Amelia asked.
“Well, Ms. Amelia, frankly I never drove, I walked! Guess I should have paid attention to the weather huh?” Mr. Henderson said with a little giggle.
“No problem,” Amelia said. Where do you want to go? Do you want me to drop you at the Times building or home?” Amelia asked as she drove quickly out of the parking lot. Either place that Mr. Henderson chose was on her way home. Just as she was pulling out, Eugene drove by rather slowly. It wasn’t good because he could probably see who was in the car with her much better than Mr. Hodges could through his office window and the rain
“Well Mr. Henderson since we are together anyway and I’ve got to take my time, why did you come to see me?” Amelia asked as she drove very slowly on the rain slick roads. She noticed that Mr. Henderson kept looking down at his side mirror. She felt he too was concerned about Sheriff Eugene seeing them.
“Ms. Amelia, I have heard stories for years coming out of Glenview. I understand that you and your parents had a run in with Mr. Hodges? Well, young lady, I do not wish to worry you, believe me. Let me just say that he is not at all a nice man. If you’ve crossed him then I am sure that you’ve already found that out. He’s always kept all of his dealings covered up pretty good but lately he has been pretty sloppy. For one thing he has that idiot Sheriff Eugene in cahoots with him who has let this Sheriff’s job go straight to his head. Both of these men are power hungry! Mr. Hodges is just like Glenview’s building. From the outside everything appears to be all pristine and beautiful but on the inside it is full of rot and disgust. I intend on exposing him for what and who he really is! Ms. Amelia, I need to hear about everything that you know!” Mr. Henderson stated.
Amelia still looking ahead said, “Frankly, Mr. Henderson, how do I know that I can trust you? I don’t know who all is in with him on this thing? I, of course, am concerned about all of the residents in Glenview, but my parents are who I am most concerned about. I tried my best to get them to come home with me today and never return. When I looked upon Mr. Hodges face, I saw pure evil. I fear for my parent’s safety!” Amelia stated with tears in her eyes.
“Ms. Amelia, I understand your concerns, and yes you should be very concerned. I have known your parents longer than you have. Henry is a dear friend of mine. I want to put Mr. Hodges behind bars where he belongs. I, however, need evidence and proof that he is doing what we both know he is!” Mr. Henderson convinced.

Today we pick back up in Chapter 17 The Tyrant!
When they had gotten the words out of their mouth, another nurse came to get them settled into their new suite. The Tyler’s had seen her around Glenview with other patients but they had not met her or been helped by her.
“Are you Mr. and Mrs. Tyler? I am Nurse Melba Applegate. I will be your nurse for the remainder of your stay. Mrs. Tyler it appears that you will only be with us a few more weeks.” Nurse Applegate concluded.
“No Mam, I will not be the only one going.” Helen answered. “When I leave, Mr. Tyler will be going home as well!”
“Oh well, for right now let’s just get you settled back into your new room! It will be a great day whenever you both are home.” Nurse Applegate said with a gentle smile. She seemed nice enough, however she wasn’t Nurse Wanda. It was obvious that she never knew Henry and Helen. Thank God that Amelia stuck to her guns when it came to insisting that her parents stay together. She felt like because they would be together that they would definitely be stronger and more aware of what was going on.
Amelia had become suspicious of even the nurses. She wondered which nurses on staff at Glenview were in cahoots with Mr. Hodges? Amelia surmised that if a patient was drugged and made to be quite that it probably made the nurse’s jobs much easier. It registered to Amelia that it is the nurses, after all, that must administer the medications to the patients, whether knowingly or unknowingly. Amelia intended to be aware of every move that Nurse Applegate made to see if she was indeed an unknowing victim or a willing party to helping Mr. Hodges, such as Sheriff Eugene was.
Nurse Applegate led Amelia and her parents down a hallway that wasn’t far from the main entrance of Glenview. This was important to Amelia, as she did not want her parents placed at the end of another dark and dreary corridor like the one that Mr. Hodges had led them down earlier. When they stopped three doors down into the hallway, Nurse Applegate turned to them and with a smile on her face stated, “Here we are! Home sweet home until you can return to your own home!”
When Henry and Helen walked in, they were pleasantly surprised! It was bright, beautiful, and Sunny! All of the décor was fresh and new and their double bed looked like a regular bed. They had a small comfortable sitting area to the right of the bed. Also a little bistro table with chairs to enjoy their meals. It was the perfect little place for the both of them for the next few weeks of their stay in Glenview. They felt like it was indeed a nice luxurious suite. Amelia too was very pleased, but then she thought again of the room where Mr. Hodges was going to place them and she truly realized how vengeful he really was.
“Oh it is beautiful, isn’t it Amelia!” Helen announced with a sweet smile. She looked at Henry who had already made his way to the bed. He gazed into Helen’s eyes and patted the bed. He smiled his little impish smile that Amelia was so used to. Nurse Applegate couldn’t help but smile as well.
“Nurse Applegate, my parents really are in love with each other, so I must warn you to be prepared for anything!” Amelia warned as she admired her parents.
“Where is my gun cabinet? I don’t see my gun cabinet anywhere! Also I want my picture of my old friend hanging right there!” Henry said as he walked in front of the bed and pointed to the wall. He needed to see the old Oak tree in front of him. He never wanted to lose anything that he gained, but he also wanted to see what else his old friend could help him with! Wouldn’t you say that would be a good place dear?” He asked Helen.
“Yes, the perfect place Henry!” Helen confirmed.
“I’ll make for sure that you get all of your things from your other room Daddy! Your old friend will be here! Amelia stated. “Gun cabinet?” She questioned. “That is a scary thought!” She thought with another smile.
“I will leave you to get used to your new suite. If you need anything please let me know.” Nurse Applegate said again with a smile that seemed to be genuine. Amelia, however, was not ready yet to let her defenses down and trust her yet?
“Do you want to go out to the gardens, Honey?” Henry asked. He had walked over to the window and was staring out. Worried that her Daddy was becoming a little disoriented, Amelia walked over and looked outside of the window as well. Surprisingly, there were beautiful gardens right outside their window! She couldn’t help but chuckle a little as she really thought that her Daddy was talking about their gardens at his own home.
“No Henry, I am a little weary in my bones! I think I need to just get something to eat and rest awhile. This has been a trying day and emotional to say the least.” Helen answered as she sat down on her little sofa. Henry agreed with Helen as he walked in front of her and sat down beside her. In true Henry fashion, he picked up her hand and kissed it tenderly. They both breathed a sigh of relief as their eyes spanned the room to take it all in.
“Amelia, darling, we are fine now. You need to go home and be with your family!” Helen stated. “Go on we are tired and will probably take a nap. Go get out of here!” She continued to order.
Amelia was torn. Yes she needed to go and be with her family, but her parents were her family as well. She never wanted them to become so comfortable in their new surroundings that they let their guard down!
“Momma, if I go home for a little while, please just keep your guard up. Don’t be fooled, even by Nurse Applegate. Do you understand me?” Amelia whispered because she never wanted anyone to hear their conversation. “I mean, do not trust anyone Momma. Right now we do not know who is going along with Mr. Hodges! Be careful.” Amelia continued to warn as she paced the floor. She then turned to her parents.
“If you need me for any reason, if Mr. Hodges dare says anything to you, call me immediately Momma! Do you understand me? Call me! Do you have my number handy to where if you need me in an emergency situation that you can call me quickly? I hate that they do not put telephones in these room. They have one at the nurse’s station. If you have to, Momma, just use your on call button in case of an emergency.”
“Yes, my dear! I know right where your number is, so go on. Get on out of here! We will be fine.” Helen reassured.
Amelia obeyed her mother and hugged them tightly. She felt as though she was leaving her child on his first day of kindergarten. She opened the door and stepped out into the hallway. Her heart was breaking to leave them. She didn’t care how beautiful or nice their room was. Amelia was more concerned about Mr. Hodges and what he was planning to do next. While walking to the front entrance, she saw Nurse Applegate.
“Oh, Nurse Applegate, my parents are exhausted and decided that they needed a rest. So I left them to rest. I wanted to say thank you. I really appreciated you being so nice to them today.” Amelia said even though she did not know if she could trust her yet. “I will be back before they retire for the night. I just wanted to make for sure that you have all my information so that you could reach me if you needed to.” Amelia continued.
Nurse Applegate reached out her hand and squeezed Amelia’s. She then looked over her shoulder and whispered. “My father is in Glenview as well Mrs. Steele. That is why I am working here. Mr. Hodges, of course does not know this. My father’s last name is Wilson, of course, different than mine because I was married. I used to work over in Scioto County, but my father lived in Mason. I applied here about six months ago so that I could keep an eye out on him. You may not know this, but Mr. Hodges also has his hooks in the Scioto County Nursing home. I would love to speak to you outside this place if possible.” Nurse Applegate whispered.
Totally shocked at what Nurse Applegate had told her, suddenly Amelia felt like she had another ally like Nurse Wanda on the inside to help watch after her parents. A huge burden seemed to roll off of Amelia’s shoulders, but still she did not take her guard completely down. She did, however, want to meet with Nurse Applegate to find out as much as she could about Mr. Hodges.
“When does your shift end?” Amelia asked. “Oh, if you leave, then who takes care of my parents?” Amelia asked in a panic as she hadn’t thought about Nurse Applegate leaving them.
“I get off at Nine o’clock tonight, but please do not worry. Nurse Warren at the front desk will check on them after I leave. She is a really sweet and compassionate nurse. She will enjoy taking care of your parents as I am sure I will.”
“Meet me for coffee at Maggie’s Pie and Coffee?” Amelia whispered.
“That sounds, wonderful, around Nine-Thirty? Nurse Applegate asked.
“Sure, I’ll meet you there! Thanks again.” Amelia said with a sigh of relief that her parents was in good hands.

Chapter 10
The Escapees!
Nurse Wanda watched Mr. Hodges’ eyes narrow and his angered expressions come upon his face as he told her the story of Mr. Tyler. Because she knew Mr. Tyler so well, the story of why he escaped became clear. Mrs. Tyler knew if anyone told Mr. Tyler that she was getting out of Glenview before he was allowed to go home that he would not stand for it.
“Mrs. Tyler told us that this would happen!” Nurse Wanda stated
“What would happen, that two old mental cases would run off into the night and put all of our jobs at risk!” Mr. Hodges barked.
“Well Sir, I know you won’t understand this and probably won’t even try to understand it, but Mr. and Mrs. Tyler are unlike any couple that I’ve ever met. I seriously think that if you cut one of them that the other would bleed. They are that close and that much in love. This is where you went wrong Sir, because Mrs. Tyler asked all the nurses not to say anything to Mr. Tyler about her early release, because she knew that he would not be left behind at Glenview without his Helen. That’s the reason he came to Glenview to begin with because Mrs. Tyler left him when she had her stroke!”
“Well that is ridiculous and crazy! Is it any wonder that Mr. Tyler is mental? Yes this just leads me to think that Mr. Tyler is crazier than I thought. So medications will be justified! Thank you Nurse Wanda, you have enlightened me more than you can imagine!” Mr. Hodges said with those same narrow eyes and that evil smirk!
“Oh Lord, what have I done?” Nurse Wanda whispered as she realized that she just made things worse instead of better. She went quickly behind the nurse’s station and began looking for Ms. Amelia’s phone number. She knew that she probably would not be at her home but she felt so desperate to let Amelia know that Mr. Hodges was not going to help her parents. Instead he was going to keep Mr. Tyler medicated to where what memory he had gained would be lost forever! As she dialed the number, the telephone rang and rang, but no answer….
Chapter 11
The Return
“Hello my Little Darlings how are you?” Helen said rather calmly when she got into the car. She was always thrilled to see her grandchildren.
“We’re fine Gramma. Did Gramps escape from the Home?” Dylan asked, as he was the one most like Henry. He found humor in so much of life as Henry had.
“Yes Dear, I’m afraid he has, but no worries, I am sure he has made it home by now!” Gramma answered.
“Way to go Gramps!” Dylan cheered and so did his brother Robbie.
“Well at least he knows his way home, right?” Robbie asked rather concerned.
“Of course he does, children, don’t fret, I am sure he is just fine!” Gramma reassured. She seriously was at total peace as she somehow knew that this was the way things were going to work themselves out. Amelia on the other hand was typical Amelia, who was trying to keep herself from having a panic attack.
“Can’t you go any faster, Honey?” Amelia pleaded.
“It’s okay Amelia, your Father’s okay. I know him. He is just going back to find what he has lost.” Helen stated rather calmly.
“Mom, you sound so sure that he’s okay, what if….”
“Now, now Amelia, we do not want to alarm the boys now do we?” Helen interrupted as Amelia’s voice was becoming more excited.
“Okay, we should be home any second. I just pray that you’re right!” Amelia stated still not convinced of her Daddy’s safety.
As Robert turned onto Eastman Street, the boys shouted, “Do you see him? Do you see him?” They hollered again.
Robert pulled the car up into Henry’s and Helen’s driveway. The boys bolted out of the car first, they proceeded to run toward the house, but Amelia helped her mother out of the car who proceeded toward the Oak tree! When they drew close, the swing that hung from the Oak tree for years was gently swinging. It could not have been the wind because in the South, in the middle of July, a stiff wind is hard to come by. A gentle breeze was blowing, however, Amelia and Helen was sure that it would take more than a gentle breeze to move the swing this hard.
“Henry, Are you here?” Helen called. “Henry, do you hear me?” Helen called again.
Just as she was going to get upset, suddenly she and Amelia heard a loud thrashing sound up above them.
“Oh my Lord,” Amelia shouted!
“Hush Daughter, he has climbed that fool tree a million times! Just don’t panic. Just act as though you’re not the least bit afraid!” Helen stated rather calmly.
Henry chuckled like he was nine years old again as he was seated on a huge limb that he sat on when he was younger. Maybe he had not climbed up that tree and sat on that limb a million times, but it was truly so many times that he knew every little crevice and every protrusion to grab onto so as to get up there fast and be seated safely. He was a site to behold as he dangled his long naked legs over the side of that limb. He had his back toward Helen and Amelia and all they saw was Henry’s backside shining brighter than most moonlights! Obviously he was in quite a hurry to leave Glenview because he didn’t take time to find clothes or maybe he didn’t remember that he even had clothes. Did he care that he was streaking like a teenager at a football game, heck no! Henry honestly could have cared less even when he was completely sane, but now all shame was completely gone. Helen wasn’t at all surprised with what she saw. It reminded her of the old Henry.

Today we are repeating the last couple of paragraphs in Chapter 9 Pursuit of Love, as I felt it necessary to lead into Chapter 10.
Chapter 9
Pursuit of Love!
Robert chuckled and teasingly said, “Amelia, the next time you go to see your mom, please ask her if she has any more advice for her Daughter and favorite Son-and-law? Tell her we will try to follow it to the tee!”
As the couple continued embracing one another, they talked and laughed until several hours had passed. They needed to go and pick up the boys. Both knew in their hearts, however, that from this day forward, although it may not be easy, that they would make every effort to put the other one first and live their lives passionately pursuing love.
Chapter 10
The Escapee!
Like an alarm clock, suddenly the phone rang.
“You get it while I take a shower! It’s probably Coach wondering why we have not picked up the boys yet. Do you mind going and getting them yourself?” Amelia asked as she searched for her bathrobe.
“Hello,” Robert said, as he answered the phone.
Robert listened in silence until it was his turn to speak, “Yes, I understand, we will be there as soon as we can get there. How is Mrs. Tyler doing?” Amelia heard Robert ask as she immediately stepped out of the bathroom.
“What is it, Robert? Is everything okay? What is it?” Amelia drilled as she could read on Robert’s face that something terrible had happened.
“Yes Mam, we will be there as soon as possible, thank you.” Robert concluded as he hung up the phone and reached for Amelia.
“What’s wrong, Oh my God is Momma okay? Is Dad? Tell me!”
“Amelia, Honey, calm down and come here! That was Nurse Wanda at Glenview. As far as she could tell your parents were okay, however there is something that has happened or rather is happening that you have to know.”
“What? Tell me Robert, what is it?”
“Well,” Robert began very slowly and softly, “it is your Dad. It seems he decided to go exploring and Nurse Wanda said that they fear he has left Glenview altogether. They do not know how or when he was able to leave but they have searched all over and have not been able to find him. She said that you need to come to Glenview because of course your Mother is beside herself. She is threatening to go look for him herself if they do not produce him soon! They really have no clue as to how long he has even been gone.”
“Oh my goodness, Mom will do it too! What could Dad be thinking? Bless his heart. He has been doing so much better! I pray he is all right! We should have seen this coming, but I sure never!” Amelia spoke as she ran around the room gathering up her clothes that were randomly misplaced by their earlier life changing event.
“Are you okay, Amelia? I will drop you off at Glenview and go get the boys. I will meet you back at Glenview once I’ve got the boys and we will go from there. Are you okay?” Robert drilled because Amelia just stopped and wasn’t moving toward the door or anything. She stood with this confused blank look on her face.
“Amelia!” Robert shouted. “Are you okay?”
Startled as Robert’s abruptness, Amelia stared into her husband’s face.
“Yes, Yes, I heard you; I was just trying to figure out what my poor little Daddy could be thinking that he was so desperate to leave Momma alone in Glenview. He must be terribly lost Robert, we have to hurry! Yes I am good with being dropped off at Glenview. Let’s hurry so that Momma will not become so desperate that she would go after him.”
When the automatic doors to Glenview had swung open, immediately Amelia could see her little Mother. She was sitting right in front of the doors in case they opened and Henry walked back in. She had her head down in her hands and her beautiful graying hair was all askew. When Helen looked up to see Amelia, she immediately tried to get up out of her chair.
“It’s okay Momma, I am here and we will find him!” Amelia tried to comfort, but her Mother wanted no part of it.
“Come on let’s get out of this place!” Helen ordered. “I am pretty sure I know where Henry is. Now what are we waiting on? Let’s go!” She continued.
“Now Momma, listen to yourself, you can’t just walk out of here, you’re not ready yet…..” Amelia tried to once again console and convince, but again she was interrupted by Helen.
“Why not, they were going to let me out in a few weeks anyway? Why can’t I walk right on out of here, Henry did! Obviously no one tried to stop him! Why would they dare try to stop me? Now are you going to help me to the door or will I have to do this thing by myself?”
“But Momma…..Please….!”
“Please nothing Amelia…..times a wasting, come on!”
“Well Momma, where are we going?”
“Now where do you think your Daddy would run off to? Think about it!” Helen was certain that she knew where Henry was going if perhaps he had not already made it there.
“Home!” Amelia shouted, “He has gone to see his old friend!”
“Yep, now let’s go!” Helen continued to order impatiently.
“Wait a minute, Mrs. Amelia!” Nurse Wanda shouted as the swinging doors once again flung open. “Mrs. Tyler, you can’t do …….Oh good Lord! They’ve gone and done it for sure, they’ve escaped out of Glenview!”
