Part 35 If Oak Trees Could Talk!
Thank you once again for reading along with me or “tuning in” each week to If Oak Trees Could Talk! Occasionally I’ve been doing other blogs along with this one to break it up a bit, so I am grateful if you have stuck in here with me. This was a trial run on doing Video blogs and of course, I picked the longest book that I’ve written to do it. However, I’ve enjoyed it and really hope that you have as well. We pick back up in Chapter 17 The Tyrant!
Chapter 17
The Tyrant!
Mr. Hodges still glaring into Amelia’s eyes realized that she meant exactly what she was telling him. He cleared his throat once more and began to walk away. “Stay here and I will direct the staff to prepare another suite immediately!”
“Oh and Mr. Hodges, it had better be top-notch, clean and updated with a bright clean décor. It must also have a window or windows that will let real light into the room. Honestly, Sir, I am expecting a freaking honeymoon suite!” Amelia demanded in light of her obvious victory as Mr. Hodges stomped away down the long hallway until he disappeared.
Amelia took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down before she went back into the room with her parents. She trembled as she had truly comforted evil itself. Finally she walked back into the horrible room. With a gentle smile she proceeded to usher her parents out of the room into the hallway.
“Mr. Hodges is making something better available for you.” Amelia stated. He realized how dismal this room was and decided that he would give you a fresher, more updated suite,” Amelia stated rather calmly, even though she was still trembling inside. She then got in the middle of her parents and began escorting them slowly to the front of Glenview from where they had been ever since they both were admitted into Glenview. As she walked along beside them a fear of more retaliation came over her. What did Mr. Hodges plan to do to her parents now?
Mr. Hodges still furious over the confrontation with Amelia, rounded the corner to the nurse’s station where Nurse Wanda stood doing paperwork. He meandered slowly up to her and with cold and calculating eyes whispered, “Nurse Smith, I regret to inform you that Glenview’s Residential Home for the Elderly no longer has need of your services. You are dismissed immediately. You may collect your belongings and leave post haste, please. I will mail to you the remainder of your compensation owed. Thank you.”
Mr. Hodges simply smirked as he knew that Nurse Wanda was the only one who could expose any of the plans that he had for Mr. and Mrs. Tyler. He felt rather proud of himself that there was one less person that would spoil his plans for the rebellious Tyler couple. He also felt that she probably had already warned Mrs. Steele about his threats to treat Henry with medicines to control him, but if there is no witness to the crime than he could quite possibly even get by with murder. He smiled as he imagined himself and Amelia in a boxing ring. He chuckled as he felt that he just dealt a hard blow to Mrs. Steele by firing Nurse Smith. It may not be the knockout blow, but it was enough to let her know who she stepped into the ring with, he thought.
“Mr. Hodges, you can’t be serious?” Nurse Wanda stated. “Surely you can’t be serious about this. I’ve been here at Glenview for nigh on thirty years, where else is there for me to go to in Mason Creek? Please Mr. Hodges, I beg of you, don’t do this!”
“There is no refuting the dismissal, Mrs. Smith. Please go now before I have you physically removed!” Mr. Hodges ordered.
“Well, have me physically removed then! I weigh about three hundred pounds so you better bring in your best to try it, Sir! I am going to have my say Mr. Hodges. I am not leaving here lesson I get to say good-bye to all of my patients, some I’ve had for ten, fifteen years maybe longer.” Nurse Wanda said as she stood her ground.
“Mrs. Smith, I’ve already got the Sheriff coming to remove you, now do you really want this to become ugly?” Mr. Hodges continued to whisper.
“Ugly, who is the ugly one here, Mr. Hodges? Yes I am going to fuss and yell because you are a devil who likes to inflict pain and torment. Don’t think I have not seen the goings on around here! I’ve kept quiet because I thought at first I was just imagining things, but when you told me about Mr. Tyler and what you intended on doing to him, yes Sir, you exposed your evil self to me! After I got to thinking about what you told me that you were going to do to Mr. Tyler, I began thinking about other patients that were doing so much better when all of a sudden they just had a relapse! What caused that relapse Mr. Hodges? It was you that was behind those dear patients’ relapses! I promise you Mr. Hodges, I will no longer be quiet!” Nurse Wanda shouted as she came out around the nurse’s station where she was going to go see some of her patients including Henry.
All of a sudden the doors opened and in walked Sheriff Eugene Perkins. He left his sheriff’s car running with siren blaring and lights on in the front entrance. He had intended on putting Nurse Wanda in the car very quickly if she didn’t leave on her own. Eugene was all red faced when walking through the door for Nurse Wanda, for like Ms. Amelia, Nurse Wanda was also a longtime family friend to his parents. He never liked arresting friends but the town where he was a sheriff was small, unfortunately for Eugene, everybody knew everybody. Just about everyone he arrested was at least an acquaintance if not a close friend to either Sheriff Eugene or his parents.
When Nurse Wanda saw Sheriff Eugene walk in, she stopped her rampage for a brief time long enough to scold him like she would one of her own children. When he was little she babysat him many times, so she felt like she had the right.
“Seriously, Eugene, you are here to arrest me? Um, um, what would your Momma and Daddy say? I’ve put powder on your behind, Boy! You’ve not got anything that I haven’t already seen. Why you want to go and get all mixed up with Mr. Hodges for? He’s going down, Eugene! He is medicated the patients here to keep them here longer and to extract more money out of them. The Good Lord only knows what other horrible things he’s done to these poor helpless folks. He is an evil man Eugene. I hate to see you go down with him because you’re all power hungry. Boy you’ve been raised better than this! I hate to think of the shame that you’re going to bring to your pour Momma, bless her pour little heart!”
Just when Nurse Wanda had begun speaking Amelia and her parents popped around the corner. They too heard all of the commotion. However, it did not take Amelia long to figure out what had happened. When she looked over at Mr. Hodges he wore a smirk of victory on his face. It was sickening to Amelia. She wasn’t going to stand and do nothing!
“Arrest her, Sheriff Perkins, do your job!” Mr. Hodges ordered as Nurse Wanda’s shouts had alerted many of the residents and their guest to the commotion that she was raising. Pretty soon the hallway filled up with spectators to watch and to listen to what was going to happen next. It was a real show for many of the residents. Nothing as exciting as this event had ever happened to them since they came to Glenview. Many of them who were in their right minds knew all along that Mr. Hodges was an evil man. To save themselves, several patients acted as though they were mentally challenged and senile to prevent him from keeping them in a medicated state. They wanted to hear and see if anything was going to be done about him?
“Okay, folks back into your suites, everything is fine here! No cause for alarm! Go back now to your suites!” Mr. Hodges demanded. The last thing he wanted was for the patients visitors to hear that he may have some shady dealings when it come to their loved ones being placed in Glenview.

Chapter 10
The Escapees!
Nurse Wanda watched Mr. Hodges’ eyes narrow and his angered expressions come upon his face as he told her the story of Mr. Tyler. Because she knew Mr. Tyler so well, the story of why he escaped became clear. Mrs. Tyler knew if anyone told Mr. Tyler that she was getting out of Glenview before he was allowed to go home that he would not stand for it.
“Mrs. Tyler told us that this would happen!” Nurse Wanda stated
“What would happen, that two old mental cases would run off into the night and put all of our jobs at risk!” Mr. Hodges barked.
“Well Sir, I know you won’t understand this and probably won’t even try to understand it, but Mr. and Mrs. Tyler are unlike any couple that I’ve ever met. I seriously think that if you cut one of them that the other would bleed. They are that close and that much in love. This is where you went wrong Sir, because Mrs. Tyler asked all the nurses not to say anything to Mr. Tyler about her early release, because she knew that he would not be left behind at Glenview without his Helen. That’s the reason he came to Glenview to begin with because Mrs. Tyler left him when she had her stroke!”
“Well that is ridiculous and crazy! Is it any wonder that Mr. Tyler is mental? Yes this just leads me to think that Mr. Tyler is crazier than I thought. So medications will be justified! Thank you Nurse Wanda, you have enlightened me more than you can imagine!” Mr. Hodges said with those same narrow eyes and that evil smirk!
“Oh Lord, what have I done?” Nurse Wanda whispered as she realized that she just made things worse instead of better. She went quickly behind the nurse’s station and began looking for Ms. Amelia’s phone number. She knew that she probably would not be at her home but she felt so desperate to let Amelia know that Mr. Hodges was not going to help her parents. Instead he was going to keep Mr. Tyler medicated to where what memory he had gained would be lost forever! As she dialed the number, the telephone rang and rang, but no answer….
Chapter 11
The Return
“Hello my Little Darlings how are you?” Helen said rather calmly when she got into the car. She was always thrilled to see her grandchildren.
“We’re fine Gramma. Did Gramps escape from the Home?” Dylan asked, as he was the one most like Henry. He found humor in so much of life as Henry had.
“Yes Dear, I’m afraid he has, but no worries, I am sure he has made it home by now!” Gramma answered.
“Way to go Gramps!” Dylan cheered and so did his brother Robbie.
“Well at least he knows his way home, right?” Robbie asked rather concerned.
“Of course he does, children, don’t fret, I am sure he is just fine!” Gramma reassured. She seriously was at total peace as she somehow knew that this was the way things were going to work themselves out. Amelia on the other hand was typical Amelia, who was trying to keep herself from having a panic attack.
“Can’t you go any faster, Honey?” Amelia pleaded.
“It’s okay Amelia, your Father’s okay. I know him. He is just going back to find what he has lost.” Helen stated rather calmly.
“Mom, you sound so sure that he’s okay, what if….”
“Now, now Amelia, we do not want to alarm the boys now do we?” Helen interrupted as Amelia’s voice was becoming more excited.
“Okay, we should be home any second. I just pray that you’re right!” Amelia stated still not convinced of her Daddy’s safety.
As Robert turned onto Eastman Street, the boys shouted, “Do you see him? Do you see him?” They hollered again.
Robert pulled the car up into Henry’s and Helen’s driveway. The boys bolted out of the car first, they proceeded to run toward the house, but Amelia helped her mother out of the car who proceeded toward the Oak tree! When they drew close, the swing that hung from the Oak tree for years was gently swinging. It could not have been the wind because in the South, in the middle of July, a stiff wind is hard to come by. A gentle breeze was blowing, however, Amelia and Helen was sure that it would take more than a gentle breeze to move the swing this hard.
“Henry, Are you here?” Helen called. “Henry, do you hear me?” Helen called again.
Just as she was going to get upset, suddenly she and Amelia heard a loud thrashing sound up above them.
“Oh my Lord,” Amelia shouted!
“Hush Daughter, he has climbed that fool tree a million times! Just don’t panic. Just act as though you’re not the least bit afraid!” Helen stated rather calmly.
Henry chuckled like he was nine years old again as he was seated on a huge limb that he sat on when he was younger. Maybe he had not climbed up that tree and sat on that limb a million times, but it was truly so many times that he knew every little crevice and every protrusion to grab onto so as to get up there fast and be seated safely. He was a site to behold as he dangled his long naked legs over the side of that limb. He had his back toward Helen and Amelia and all they saw was Henry’s backside shining brighter than most moonlights! Obviously he was in quite a hurry to leave Glenview because he didn’t take time to find clothes or maybe he didn’t remember that he even had clothes. Did he care that he was streaking like a teenager at a football game, heck no! Henry honestly could have cared less even when he was completely sane, but now all shame was completely gone. Helen wasn’t at all surprised with what she saw. It reminded her of the old Henry.

Part 12 If Oak Trees Could Talk!
Wow! Welcome back to Part 12 If Oak Trees Could Talk!” We are moving right along and I am so honored that you’ve chose to spend this time with me each week.
Even though If Oak Trees Could Talk is a fictional story I feel as if by actually telling it to you that I am opening a very private door to a personal place in my heart each week! This is a place of wonderful childhood memories of living on a farm in Kentucky with two exceptional parents and five sisters! My main characters in If Oak Trees Could Talk, are Henry and Helen Tyler that remind me so much of my loving parents!
As we read today and finish Chapter 5 A Gift of Hope, it is indeed my hope that you will continue to let me share my heart with you through this book each week!
Chapter 5
A Gift of Hope
When Helen and Amelia knocked on Henry’s door they could hear Henry talking with someone. However, once entering the room, neither of them saw anybody.
“Who was you talking too Henry?” Helen questioned.
“Oh I was just chatting with an old friend.” Henry replied, once again with that mischievous grin upon his face.
“Amelia has something special for you Henry!”
“Oh yeah?” Henry perked up like a little boy. “What is it?”
Amelia handed her Daddy the journals first. He stared blankly at them as if to ask, what are these books for, but then he chuckled out loud.
“Do you like them Daddy?”
Henry never answered Amelia. She proceeded to give him the picture that she had framed.
“There you are!” Henry replied and chuckled out loud again.
“You’ve not changed a bit.” He continued as if he really was talking with an old friend. Then tears filled his eyes as he took notice of the ladies in the room.
“Come here my daughter.” Henry said as he motioned for Amelia to come.
She did as she was told and Henry hugged her tightly and kissed her forehead.
“No better gift could I have ever received my sweet. I love them and I will use them to get out of here. I promise you my dear.”
“Why are you standing way over there?” He said as he turned to Helen. “Get over here and lay one on me!”
Helen too obeyed and did as Henry commanded. He held her tightly, kissed her square on the lips and whispered softly. “Soon, my Dear, soon I promise, we’re breaking out of this joint!”
Helen smiled tenderly. She knew that Henry never promised her anything that he did not fulfill. She knew how soon she was to leave Glenview, but when she looked into Henry’s face, she became convinced that he knew more about it than even she did. So she too chuckled with him and hugged him tightly.
Before Amelia left to go home, she was able to get Henry’s picture hung on the wall directly in front of his bed. She had much hope that as Henry seen his “old friend” that the empty journals would be filled, but most importantly her Daddy’s memory would be completely restored and he, along with her mother would be home.
